Coin shortage in U.S.

My love of coins started as a kid, by inspecting each one I had, to fill coin collecting books. Still have them. My dad, always with coins in his pockets, would deposit them in the coin jar each evening. Despite my raiding that jar, the volume would steadily grow. I have followed in his footsteps, having filled 5 gallon jugs. It was, and is, a safe, steady way to accumulate mad money. Now, Morgan and Peace silver dollars, are my passion. Talk about art and craftsmanship. For me, they are emblematic of a time in this country, long lost, where hard currency was backed up, unlike today. My dad carried an 1889 Morgan silver dollar and I carry it now, as a reminder that "cash is king". Live within your means, and keep debt to a bare minimum.

Ate breakfast at a local eatery a few days ago. When I checked out the waiter said, "We waved the twenty-four cents so we don't have to give change."

I said, "Here's an extra buck. I want the seventy-six cents for my piggy banks."

He obliged.

The next day another business owner asked if I'd heard about the coin shortage. "No." Now I understand the waiter's comment.

Haven't seen any signs like that here in NJ. I am experiencing a coin shortage, since the banks are closed I can't get quarters for laundry.

None of the banks in my area have change counting machines. If you use a Coinstar or other change device ( at Wal-Mart or grocery stores), you pay a 9 percent convenience fee. At that discount, it is no wonder people have large containers of coins. Cut that rate to close to zero and coins will come in quickly.

A friend of ours has a chain of restaurants in Miami. He says that only 2 percent of their sales are now in cash currency. This is in Miami, the one time cash capital of the world.

My wife's credit union will do all that free. I have a box about a foot square loaded to the top. A lot of it is not pennies, so there is a few bucks there.. You drop off your change at the credit union and they run in threw the machine and put the money into your checking account. Then you can do with it what you want

Sidebar-- now that I no longer go to Corvettes at Carlisle (normally for 3 long days)I have a large amount of quarters.

All the bathrooms both fixed inside buildings and the ubiquitous port-o- pottys have people assigned to them to keep them clean. They do a excellent job and work for tips only so I always made it a point to have a box with quarters handy. Every time we go in through 2 quarters in the tray. As a older male that could be quite a few trips!:D

The Morgan silver dollars are very beautiful coins. When I gave lectures about the old poll taxes I would start my lecture by dropping two Morgan silver dollars on the table. What a wondrous sound they made.
