"cokes" Numbered to the Gun?

I don't find it all that unusual a pair of coke bottle stocks is numbered to the revolver. S&W may have numbered the stocks or maybe an owner of the firearm did. S&W usually did not stamp the S when numbering stocks and only the right stock panel was numbered. I have an engraved 44 Magnum, S170040, shipped in September 1957 with the right stock panel numbered to the revolver (number only, no S). Another possibility is the 44 Magnum was returned for service, and the panels were numbered to make sure they were kept with the correct revolver.
