Cold Weather Apparel

So I walk into the Overland Sheepskin Coat Store, Taos, NM.
It’s Summer time and everything is on SALE!
I try on some coats.
It’s the Real Deal! These are good looking Jackets. And They are Heavy!
And even on sale, they ain’t cheap!
And I look so much like a Bear in town, I’ll need to wear an Orange Vest to avoid getting shot at.
Didn't take me long to realize these are not for me!

My grandpa said that with a real buffalo robe coat you could fold the collar up to make a hood, sit down on the ground at 30 below and stay warm.
You can get one starting at about $2500. Half the warmth comes from you just walking around in it. They weigh about 25#

RE: Cold Weather Wear

I spent the last four years of my working life on the Canadian Border at Scobey, MT. The first winter 2003/04 the temps dipped to -60 F and the wind blew constantly. I had our Arctic Parka with fur trimmed hood. It was designed to keep us warm outside. The only time it truly kept me warm is when the wind quit and I was busy doing something. Looking back I am not sure that anything short of one of the exposure suits worn by the folks at the south pole would have kept us warm.
I have used the down parkas, the fiber quilted parkas, fleece. skin wool Most work depending on the temperature you are in.
I love the sheepskin wool linings. And once you get used to the weight they are great. The heavy leather always took its toll for the first few weeks in Florida when we wore our Navy leather flight jackets. Once the body adjusted to the weight we were fine.
Like most of the folks have said, it all comes down to a matter of personal choice and where you are going.

But, isn't it pretty when the air twinkles with the bits of frozen moisture from your breath and neat that when you spit a c small chunk of ice bounces off what you spit at.

Found out what cold really is huh. When the wind blows up by thee high line east of the divide it is bitter. There is a reason eastern Montana coyote pelts bring a premium.

I can remember one year the ambient temperature at the Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, PA was 15 below zero. I was sure glad I was wearing my shearling coat and hunting boots that day. I had no problem with the cold at all.

Have had a Cabala Windstopper Fleece for a while.
It’s my regular winter jacket.
Wear it all the time when the North Breeze Blows.

If I was Phil, I would have bitten a hunk out of anyone who tried to drag me out of my warm borrow that day!

A relevant factoid: in 1997 W.L.Gore & Associates was experimenting with other uses of their Gore-Tex product (the breathable water resistant synthetic they use for their outerwear). They found out that coating guitar strings with it made them corrosion resistant, longer lasting and easy on the fingers. They were a hit and Elixir has become one of the best selling string companies on the planet.

Old thread useful information.

I work outside at night. Interacting with cops is part of my job and one thing that I've noticed is that I NEVER see a cop in a bulky, heavy coat unless they're working something static like a traffic accident. The cops I see layer up underneath and wear a medium weight fleece on top.

I use the Army ECWCS long johns under my uniform at work. Last winter it got down to 12 below before I had to put on a coat.
