Somewhat ironic reading this zombie thread on a day when the high is forecast to be 102.
I spent the last four years of my working life on the Canadian Border at Scobey, MT. The first winter 2003/04 the temps dipped to -60 F and the wind blew constantly. I had our Arctic Parka with fur trimmed hood. It was designed to keep us warm outside. The only time it truly kept me warm is when the wind quit and I was busy doing something. Looking back I am not sure that anything short of one of the exposure suits worn by the folks at the south pole would have kept us warm.

I can remember one year the ambient temperature at the Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, PA was 15 below zero. I was sure glad I was wearing my shearling coat and hunting boots that day. I had no problem with the cold at all.
If I was Phil, I would have bitten a hunk out of anyone who tried to drag me out of my warm borrow that day!
I prefer wool myself. One thing I learned in the Boy Scouts was that you dress in layers so you can adjust your clothing as you warm up.
