While looking for a 3 inch barrel 629, I came across as super nice no dash 657 with a 3 inch barrel. There sure doesn't seem to be very many of them out there. This is not a question about the 41 mag in general. Specifically this gun.

He is asking $1200 with combat grips or $1000 without combat grips. No box or papers. Thoughts?

Asking premium price for sure. If he has the box check the label and see if he is charging extra for the grips that came on it... I have seen a few questionable dealers doing just that. Price is subjective but I think a couple hundred too high....

Not on my list of "collectibles" but I don't think I've ever seen a 3 inch 657 no dash for sale where I shop. The price does seem a little high and I would definitely confirm the original stocks as suggested by Ken158. I'm not sure when the Lew Horton 3 inch guns shipped (dash ?) with combat stocks but if it is one of those it may well be worth the asking price. Good luck.

Thanks for the input guys. I actually found where three of them have recently sold on GunBroker with combat grips for just about exactly what he's asking.

The grips are not original combats. They are John Culina grips. I have several sets of those grips and they are fantastic. I also have several factory round butt too. I would probably jump on it if it was a great deal but since it seems to be basically fair market value, I think I'm going to continue to look for my 629.

Good luck on the 3" 629 hunt, I've been wanting one for years. A -4 in fact. A 657 is more rare I would say but I would get what you want.

price

Sounds like $1200 is about market value on those with correct grips. Not a deal, but good luck finding one for less.

Agreed! In my world $1200 is the magic number for this gun.

I have 2 657 no dash with combats. If in mint condition with combats it's easily worth $1000 to $1500, with $1200 to $1400 being what I've seen them go for at Reno shows in the past 12 months. These prices were without box and goodies. FWIW, I'd buy a third at $1200 if it were in 95% + condition with factory combats.

While the Culina's are nice... they certainly aren't an exact repro of the OEM Smith Combats like came on the Lew Horton's that are steadily commanding the $350+ Premium on Ebay currently. They have a longer profile than my Lew Horton's do which when carrying has annoyed me. The LHS Combats fit my hand like a glove and are as compact in length like they were made just for me. The Culina's don't fit as nice in the hand or wear as compact on my side. Just an FYI for in the future... It's obviously visible to me in this pic and even more so in person...

Well just an update.....we settled on $1100 and I'm happy with that. That seems to be at the very bottom of the market and it's a fantastic gun. VERY familiar with Combat grips. These Culinas are actually somewhat rare in that they have the football relief on the left side and John pretty much only does the speedloader reliefs now. I have a safe full of N round combats so I'm good there. The gun can only appreciate from there in my opinion and I like "different". Thanks for all the help guys.

Not a bad deal. The market price seems to answer your question about collectability. You just won't find one of these under 1k-1.2k minimum. Reason being they are AWESOME guns and they sure don't make em anymore. I wouldn't call it a rare piece, but scarce maybe. I would love to have one. I've got a 29-3 3" Lew Horton Overrun and love it. I'd imagine the 41 magnum is one SWEET shooter.

If that gun had the original grips no doubt you'd be shelling out AT LEAST another 2 hundy

I actually like the Football grips you got there! I like my Culina's 90% of what I like my Smith-Combats so from a cost perspective, value to rate ratio... The Culina's win. I was in a hurry to finish a project this morning for work and would have typed that above if not for a panic work computer problem! I've yet to shoot a .41Magnum... I need to fix that!

I looked for years to just find one for sale, there was no doubt that it was going home with me, but I had to negotiate ;)

Now, I have bought 3 more, and helped out some fellow S&W guys with a 3" 657 of their own. I would buy another if it fell into my lap today :)

I can tel l you for sure those are not Culina combats

I had an option to buy the gun with or without the grips. These are not your grips I need to have a talk with him. He hasn't shipped the gun yet and I May be able to get the price adjusted.
