John Hodgman said "the difference between a hoarder and a collector is a display case" and I think there's a small bit of truth in that.

We are in a hobby that encourages hoarding. Those grips, that holster, those boxes and papers and little screwdrivers that come with guns we buy used, they accumulate. That ammo, why who cares if I've not had a .32acp for six years, I'm sure I'll find a use for it! I try to keep in mind that the stuff I don't use takes up space I really don't have and clean everything out a couple times a year, but it's tricky.

I'm a shooter. I've found that I can't really shoot more than about half a dozen, well maybe up to 8. Any more than that and I can't get enough range time with each to get really comfortable with them. Of course similar models are easier to include. Not that much difference between my Model 66 and Model 14.

That said, I have more than that but they are guns I acquired for one reason or another, often just out of curiosity. I keep them because they aren't anything special and aren't really worth selling. There's a few I don't shoot much but have owned for 40 years.

If you acquire your guns with a theme, you're a collector.

If you acquire your guns randomly, you're an accumulator. If you never sell any you're a hoarder.

If you spend more on ammo (reloader or not) than you do guns then you're another type: a Shooter.
 
I was a accumulator or a collector until I had to move into this apartment. When I think about the things that I sold cheap, gave away or just left in my garage and workshop, I don't know whether to throw up, cry or both.
I sold my house before I got a chance to have a sale of things that I had to get rid of. At the time I was hurting so much from losing my wife that I didn't care.
 
I admit to accumulating guns and hoarding books, ammo and components. I have been selling guns, shooting reloads and giving away books for the past two years. I need to load up 500 or so rounds of .38s and about 100 .357s so I'm not tempted to shoot any factory stuff. Just found 50 primed .44 Spl cases, so I need to load and fire them. Then I will sell my last .44 in my quest for simplicity, which appeals more to me at this stage than variety.
 
I think my son summed me up best when he said "Dad your a hoarder, but with really cool stuff". Guns, outboard motors, Honda 3 wheelers and Harleys. Although I've never had more than 4 Harleys at a time. I like old mechanical things. I want to save them all.
 
Collector/hoarder

This thread seems to have died peacefully.

I previously mentioned, the extensive list of things I've collected was lost.

Rightfully I should bury it, put a tombstone on it, and forget it, Instead, every day, one or more things that I've collected comes to mind, and it starts anew.

I no longer list those things, but they still bug me, and I suppose that I'll just have to live with it, and belabor you folks also.

The only things I collect are 1976 Bi-Centennial "Drummer Boy" quarters. Reason being, my first born was in '76.
 
I started out in this game as what I thought was a collector. Then I had so much varied stuff that I thought I was a hoarder. Now with two rooms of stuff I realize that I am a accumulator! That is my story and I am sticking to it!!
 
Over the years my wife often complained about my collecting. Stopped in a flea market, picked up a WWII USMC camo jump smock for asking price of $4. Sold it for $750.00 , bought her a real pearl neckless. Older collecting long time friend told the wife, " what would rather he do? Collect old Army stuff or bar hop and chase women? nuf sed.

My Wife too realizes that this stuff will sell for much more than I paid for it. However, she still does not like it......
 
I have made mistakes selling. I have probably not made mistakes buying. So now I buy (not often, anymore), but almost never sell. I would probably not say this to an anti, but I possibly have enough guns. And the net total is nowhere near a hundred - far fewer.
