Collector/hoarder

This thread seems to have died peacefully.

I previously mentioned, the extensive list of things I've collected was lost.

Rightfully I should bury it, put a tombstone on it, and forget it, Instead, every day, one or more things that I've collected comes to mind, and it starts anew.

I no longer list those things, but they still bug me, and I suppose that I'll just have to live with it, and belabor you folks also.

The only things I collect are 1976 Bi-Centennial "Drummer Boy" quarters. Reason being, my first born was in '76.
 
I started out in this game as what I thought was a collector. Then I had so much varied stuff that I thought I was a hoarder. Now with two rooms of stuff I realize that I am a accumulator! That is my story and I am sticking to it!!
 
Over the years my wife often complained about my collecting. Stopped in a flea market, picked up a WWII USMC camo jump smock for asking price of $4. Sold it for $750.00 , bought her a real pearl neckless. Older collecting long time friend told the wife, " what would rather he do? Collect old Army stuff or bar hop and chase women? nuf sed.

My Wife too realizes that this stuff will sell for much more than I paid for it. However, she still does not like it......
 
I have made mistakes selling. I have probably not made mistakes buying. So now I buy (not often, anymore), but almost never sell. I would probably not say this to an anti, but I possibly have enough guns. And the net total is nowhere near a hundred - far fewer.

Not everything has to be a firearm. I have six safes (not all full), but two full rooms of firearms related stuff, from ammo boxes to oil cans.

Why did you buy another one? They all look alike to me. You surely didn't need it.

Me:
They just sit there in the cabinet and don't eat or need to see a vet ever. Sometimes I shoot them and thus the only expense is for a few bullets.
BTW, why do you need 7 horses? They cost more and more every day and then they die and you get no return.

She:
Well OK dear as long as you're happy and you got a good deal.

I dunno which category describes me the best…

Regarding Smitties, there certainly was a time when I wanted every S&W wheelgun I saw, definitely. After decades of working in gun shops and just being your average avid gun guy, my affinities gradually became much more focused and I've reached the point to where I have prime specimens of every single firearm that I find desirable (except for the out-of-production Thompson Center all-weather flintlock. Where'd those all disappear to?) So I'm out of the market for any more.

Same with fishing gear.
Same with ham radio gear.
Same with drums.
Same with guitars and basses.
Same with guitar and bass amplifiers.

That said, I live alone, thankfully, and my house generally looks like an explosion in a pawnshop. Nothing comes for free. Haha
 
My Dad, rest his soul, was a serious collector (vintage high-end German beer steins, e.g. Mettlach) and an accumulator (anything he thought was a good deal at an auction or flea market!). He was a child of the Great Depression and for many years he didn't believe in selling anything. The cellar was packed! That changed when he and Mom got into their 70s, and most everything but the steins were sold or traded. I guess that I inherited some of that mentality, as well as a few steins! Besides accumulating and restoring some vintage meat cleavers and vintage baseball gloves, I own a few electric guitars and have gone through a couple of Harleys. I am also an accumulator/collector of vintage S&W revolvers, and other assorted firearms (Winchester, Colt, Remington, SIG, etc.). I'm not sure what category I'm in...
I do know that most of us have wives that cannot fathom our fascination, but usually relent. As GypsmJim says:

I spent the first part of my gun life "collecting" guns that fulfilled a need for my hunting interests. Handy to have when needed, but served no other purpose. With a decrease in hunting I've vastly reduced the stable to just a very few, that turns out to be the same originals I used in the beginning years. I don't miss a single one that have left for new homes. Actually, I shoot more and enjoy it more with what remains. If I could do it all over again, there would not have been a collection of guns that just sat in the safe getting ignored.
 
Fellow Collectors

We're all collectors! The kind, and scope, is highly controversial. The subject can be cussed, and discussed, 'til the cows come home. To admit being a collector, is a bitter pill to swallow. A few collectable things, that are difficult to admit, even to ourselves are; grudges, lies, Aces /pains, skill, grudges, and the biggies, good and bad memories.

This may be a good time to lay this highly controversial subject to rest, while there's a little hide & hair left on the dead horse.

This thread came along at the right time. Been a collector of many things over the years starting with coins, baseball cards and stamps.

Time passed, interests change and collections grew. Guns, guitars, pro audio equipment, keyboards and vehicles became the logical progression.

Became certified (by watching too much Miami Vice) 10mm nut so collection took off in that direction quickly. There weren't but 20 or so 10mm pistols out there so completing the collection wasn't completely unobtainable.

Lately, I've been in buy/sell/trade mode to refine the focus of the hoard. Since my hunting days have seriously dwindled, unloading hunting rifles and pistols makes sense currently.

Also realized recently that at my advanced age and arthritic condition, shooting the S&W 629PC 2.625" can be painful whereas shooting the S&W 629 5" with the same rounds is acceptable. Don't mind shooting snubs in 357 Mag or 38 Special but 44 Mag snub shooting is not something that even sounds fun anymore.

Collector? Yes. Accumulator? As charged. Hoarder? For ammo!
 
Since we're back at this, I recently discovered a hoard of 20 gauge shells and used it as justification to buy a shotgun in that gauge. Once I have depleted the shells I will pass the shotgun on to a young shooter. I will save a few boxes for him. I think it's called the circle of life...or a vicious circle or something like that.

Well, I'm' back at it again. I just can't resist. After considerable self assessment, and deliberation, I find it necessary to change my collective rating, from collector, to a collecting "addict".
