colonoscopy... anyone else ben thru this ?

Had mine in Jan of this year. I will have to agree the prep was nasty. I took a prep called Moviprep. I will have to say it wasent that bad the night before. The morning of I had to drink more of it as it was a two part system. Mix it up and chill it. POUR out the amount to drink in a seperate glass. The smell was the worse when I drank out of the bottle. Th procedure was wild. I wise-cracked with the crew and then saw tha I was getting the Mike Jackson drug and the Nurse told me that she would be with me the whole time not to worry. Dang she was a cutie. No problems until they was wheeling me back and was snoring like a freight train. Wife said she heard me coming around the corner. I really liked that nurse she was a cutie. My daughter met us for breakfast at Bob Evans after and then sleep like a baby for a couple more hours later. Man I love that one nurse she was awesome and cute to. No problems inside awesome pictures of the inside but no nurses though. Father passed away almost 5 years ago from cancer so it was a no-brainer. Get it done and enjoy the nurses.

It's not a problem. My prep was to drink a whole jar of Mirilax in Gatorade. Wasn't bad at all. Even the ****ting wasn't bad......I went in, didn't remember a thing, and left. You should have had it done years ago.

Now if you want to talk about hemmorhoid surgery.....

I found the prep difficult. Different Docs use different preps though.

At a very healthy age 49 they found Stage IV Colon Cancer.
Never had any symptoms.

If I'd gone in 5 years earlier the outcome would like be different.
As it is now I've been doing weekly Chemo for almost 3 years, buying time. My kids are only 9 & 11, so time matters.

With my diagnosis approximately 50% of people are dead at 18 months.
So the good part is I'm beating the bell curve. However it's just a matter of time before it gets me.

So...... Get off your butts and get it done folks :)

Emory

Hang in there Brother !!!

I was due for one 3 years ago and after reading report after report it became apparent to both myself and my Physician that it was basically an unnecessary and evasive procedure. I have no history of colon or bowel cancer in my family history,I have a clean bill of health every year after a comprehensive checkup and blood enzyme tests and the incidents of complications far out weigh the benefits according to not only the New England Journal of medicine but several trusted medical journals.I will submit only if my GST level shows elevation.

Go Lightly, that was the stuff. (I think it is spelled differently.) What a misnomer. "Go Lots and Violently" is more like it.

When I checked in, the nurse asked if I had met the doc, and I said "No, it's our first date." She said they get a lot of those sorts of comments, and that mine was pretty mild compared to some. Apparently it is not an office in which the sensitive stay very long.:p

SW shooter, I would say just relax. Once the prep begins, It's pretty much over in 2 -2 1/2 hrs so if you're concerned about getting to the seat, just try to plan on staying as close as you're comfortable with. I've got issues with my knees, but I do understand and respect your fears. The suggestions about a higher fiber diet for a couple of days prior, is not a bad one. Also mixing it with CHILLED Gatorade/powerade also helps with the taste. The first time I did it, I was told to mix with water and it tasted terrible. The instructions I got the 2nd time suggested the Gatorade. Since I'm a type 2 diabetic(well controlled) I used the zero sugar type. Everything worked out fine(pun intended). Do have someone drive you. Depending on how you feel afterwords, you may feel that you can drive, but I wouldn't recommend it. And when it's all done you'll be hungry, but just take it slow on the food. By the next day you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.
Just remember that the procedure isn't just for you, but it's outcome can affect your loved ones. I'm sure you'll do just fine.:)

I agree that the prep is the worst part, but even that isn't really bad. I've found my best friend to be a tube of Desitin for once the cocktail starts to do its job. The "procedure" is easy. Polyps you won't even know about unless the Dr. tells you. They found a small malignant tumor in my colon on my first colonoscopy, which was removed by a surgeon. No chemo or radiation was required. Three years later I'm cancer free. While the cancer was NOT good news, I'm sure glad they caught it as early as they did. It could have been MUCH worse for me.

By the way.............. do you know what a colonoscope is? It's a long tube with an a@@ at both ends. I'm gone..............

Thanks for posting this thread guys. It is calming down my apprehension and nervousness about taking this test in the next week or so per my Dr's advice. 586L-Frame.

am 65 but never had had this done ...that changes this thur. when i go locally to have it preformed.
family doc thought it was about time i did . havent had much of any thing out of whack to complain about , occasional hard stools but no blood and eat a pretty healthy diet and maintain an exercise routine . weight is nicely in check , with in 5 lbs. of what i weighed in high school

my info on this says if they find a polyp , they " can use a thin wire snare to lasso it " yeah ha !! doesnt sound like much of a party
for the patient !
it also states " that polyps- fleshy tumors, are usually the for runners of cancer " ..... say what ? i certainly hope not !!

anyone who has had this preformed and what results were obtained , i hope to hear from .
my neighbor , who is about 80 plus years old , says it is not that bad and the prep is usually worse than the test !
still , all in all , i tend to worry when the outcome varies from one person to the next .

I've got a friend with stage 4 cancer doing chemo. Started in the Colon and then spread to the liver. Get the blasted test. He waited, didn't feel the need and you see where it got him.

I'll tell everyone this. Got family then get a colonoscopy. Don't put them in the position of having to bury you sooner than they have too.

Follow the prep to a T. Try to schedule on a Monday so you are at home the day before-it's comforting to be able to use your own throne. When you go-dress for comfort-by that I mean a shirt and a pr of umbros. When you get there they will strip you of any dignity you may still have remaining after Sunday night-but you won't care because you will be one of many there for the same thing. You will get a large piece of toilet paper with two arm holes and instructed to take off your pantses and put it on with the opening in the back. Duh. They do this first thing so you don't panic and run off :D
Lie back and enjoy the ride-you done already bought and paid for the ticket. I was in the second wave this morning-as the first wave trickled back it sounded like the Evinrude dealership smoke off. A cute-and I mean cute nurse came in and prepped me and then I was wheeled in to see the Doctor. He looked at me with a wicked grin and the next thing I remember I was back in the room firing up the evinrude. Think of it this way-you think you have a bad Monday-my doctor went up 17 of them today-How's about thinking about that whilst bar b quing Sunday afternoon????
If I had the choice of doing this or 13 weeks of chemo-I'll take this in a heartbeat.
There is NO reason not to do this-none-none whatsoever and I really mean it.
Plus momma will tale you to get donuts afterwards if you whine enough :D

DO DO THIS:

1) When you start thoroughly swab your sphincter with diaper rash ointment and keep it protected throughout the evacuation process. After using the toilet only pat yourself clean. DO NOT RUB OR WIPE. Then reapply diaper rash ointment.

2) During the evacuation remember you can have clear items such chicken broth, beef broth, green tea with sugar etc. This is outlined in the instructions. My first time I starved myself and it was unpleasant.

3) Have empathy for your doctor.... I washed my nether regions twice thoroughly just for the doctor (tell him you did so.)

4) DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES APPLY COLOGNE TO YOUR BACKSIDE. SOME INDIVIDUALS ARE ALLERGIC. YOU DO NOT WANT SOMEONE HOLDING ON TO NINE FEET OF HOSE STUCK UP YOUR ANUS SNEEZING!

there is nothing in this world that tastes worse than the stuff you're going to drink the day before the procedure. i had my last one 2 years ago so it may taste better now but i doubt it.

My wife has digestive problems and wanted a colonoscopy at age 49. Dr. said no since there was no family history. Her dad died at 52 from heart problems and she had two grandparents die in their 50's from heart trouble. My question is......When you have a history of family dying young from heart problems, how do you know they weren't going to develop colon cancer if they lived to be 60?

Also...adopted people who don't know their family history. How come they default to "no history" instead of the other way?

Not as bad as I had it all made out to be, expect "angry anus" syndrone for about 12hrs though. Get er' done!

Short answer?....you don't. I stay fully engaged and informed when it comes to my health and consider my physician my partner not my priest...so when I bring all the studies and papers on the lack of evidence of a necessity or effectiveness of this procedure in diagnosing a critical growth every 5 years with my history and he agrees.....I go with it. You do what you feel is right for you....but all too often we place too much trust in physicians who are either lazy, out of touch or just running up our insurance to cover his ever increasing overheads. Stay informed, ask questions and don't be bullied.

I had one in January and drinking the awful stuff ahead of time is bad, but nothing compared to drinking the Barium ahead of an upper G.I. The worst part is when its all over some pretty 20 year old nurse telling you that you need to make wind, because when you start making wind, you will sound like an Evinrude motor. If your like me and had a whole bunch of people ahead of you it sounds like some weird symphony because you will be hearing noises coming from around the room that brings one to mind of the campfire scene in Blazing Saddles. On the plus side though you will feel like you solved the energy crisis single handed. You will be a methane plant and wind farm all your own.
