Colonoscopy Journal

A colonoscopy is nothing compared to a cystoscopy...anyone here who's had one knows exactly what I mean! I had 5 within a year's time. Since nothing has shown up in that time I got a reprieve....a full year interval between check-ups. Unfortunately, my next one is coming due later this month.

Back to the colonoscopy.....I was talking to someone who had just lost a cousin to colon cancer & I was mentioning that I had a close friend who had been diagnosed & treated for colon cancer. The guy I was talking to says: "Yeah...I went and got checked....they gave me one of them Bavarian Enemas" Now, it was all I could do not to lose it...I immediately began picturing a heavy-set blond woman named Gretchen w/pigtails holding an enema bag..I was barely able to keep a straight face!

Had it last month. Its really no big deal. No solid food the day before the procedure but the allowable jello and sugar water, tea, coffee stave off the hunger. Once they turn on the sedative you are out cold and next thing you wake up. It seemed like one second later. Its a cancer you can avoid.

I had a cystoscopy last year. They use general anesthesia, so it's not bad. After effects are nil.

Nope, colonoscopies aren't much fun. I've been through five of them. Colon problems started in my 30s. I was hospitalized three times. Eventually lost about a foot and a half of my colon to Diverticulitis. That was ten years ago, but I remember it like yesterday.
I'm due for another one along about next Febuary. I'm not looking forward to it, but I also won't hesitate for a moment. The alternative is far more unpleasent.

Garmasters, are you familiar with the phrase "TMI" ( as in too much information)??? The pics I could have lived without, and this from a guy who has been there done that, more than once. The good news is that the procedure, properly done, isn't all that bad and saves thousands of lives every year. I believe the OP's original piece is the work or Dave Barry.

From past experience, if you use Metamucil (or the cheap generic stuff) regularly you won't have the night-before misery when you use the tasty laxative drink. Bring lots of gun magazines, your portable CD player, a cordless phone and maybe a laptop and it's party time!
