Colt 1911 classic a1 70 series

I just bought one of these, the plunger that rides against the safety and the slide lock is very stiff, I can't even reassembly the firearm with out using something to push the plunger in. I have lubed it well, I was just wondering if this is normal and will it get better over time. Love the gun btw.

I use the tip of a golf tee.
Also did the "log man" mod to the slide lock. Go to 1911 forum.c om and look it up.

They will loosen up as the detent on the safety wears and mates to the tip of the plunger. For now a little dab of oil or grease helps with reassembly. Using a thin object also helps - such as a plastic business card or similar.

When reassembly is done - do NOT force anything! Simply hold plunger in with suggestion above. It will go in.

Don't over oil that plunger tube, oil can dry and become gummy or even hard, making reassembly even more difficult. Reassembly and inserting the slide stop without leaving an arc shaped scratch on the receiver and/or slide is a learned skill. It takes time.

For the beginner, I recommend using something, preferably something made of plastic so it will not mar the finish on the receiver, to depress the plunger while installing the slide stop. A credit card will probable do the job well.

There could be crud inside the tube holding the spring. Remove the spring and blow some gunscrubber or brake &Parts cleaner through it. If you can pass a small rod through it, often a small drill bit will fit. Then reassemble with a drop of a light CLP. I have often had the opposite problem of the safety not held in place enough. That usually requires a dremmel and a round cuter end to enlarge the detente spot on the safety end.
