COMBAT on MeTV!

Not Hogan's Heroe's

I enjoyed watching the show as a kid but my dad didn't seem to like it. When I asked why he said "That wasn't my war." Now when Black Sheep Squadron came out he watched it religiously but that was partly to point out inaccuracies. I remember watching Stalag 17 at my aunts and uncles house and one of my cousins asked me "Do you think that's what a POW camp was really like?". I replied "How should I know, ask your dad, he was a POW." My Uncle got up and left the room and my cousins just looked shocked. My aunt said "We don't talk about that, the kids didn't know."

I have gathered that there was nothing humorous about being in a German prison camp.

The reason that Sgt. Saunders had the camo helmet cover was to make it easier to spot him on film or make his character stand out from the others in the distance shots. Like his Thompson didn't ? At least that's what I read somewhere and it makes sense.

Speaking of him carrying the Thompson. The reason that happened according to an interview I saw with Rick Jason (Lt. Hanley) was that he said he knew a lot about guns while Viv Morrow was clueless. Jason said he chose the Carbine because of it being lighter, and Morrow was surprised at hoe heavy it was and made the Producers create a mock up of the Tommy gun when he was shooting scenes that had no fighting involved. Hanleys Carbine was the real deal from beginning to end of series.

I was just talking to my mother about Combat a few days ago. I told her I could remember watching it when it came on and she would turn it off because it wasn't meant for children (I was 4 or 5). Well I got the last laugh some 45 years later cause I'm watching it on you tube. ( she said she would let me now:p)
