I am having a problem with my mouse. I have to click twice
when single click is needed. it is happening very frequently now.
Do you think I need a new mouse or is it a computer problem?
the computer is less than a year old, but the mouse is several
years old.
thanks

What kind of mouse? Old tracking ball type underneath? If so, yes get rid of it. Buy a laser mouse. Wireless models are nice too! ;)

Try cleaning the dust and fur out of the mouse first. BTDT and it can give really odd results.

hammer sounds good. we just had replaced, co. freebie, the box in the closet, router. and the phone still had problems w/ the system. repairman finally after time on his I pod and the co. reset more systems. the phone works, but changeing the wireless router affected the laptops. so another 45 min. on the phone. found the problem. this might be something to remember!! the new internet/tv/phone boxes are upgraded. but have the system that was in the old box, plus a 2ed. sys., plus an ultra system w/ high security. but had to reset the new BOX back to the old box settings so the 8 yr. old laptop would be able to get on the internet. so new tech., but doesn't work w/ the older cpu settings. sorry if the sys replacement is confuseing. but it may happen to someone, and all you have to suggest is reset back to orginal application.

If you have one of the older models of mouse that still has a ball to detect movement, You may want to look at the memo presented here:

snopes.com: Mouse Balls

If you just want to laugh at old technology, you will want to read the memo also.

I remember seeing this memo in the late 80's. The IBM PC was first built in 1984.

In the case that you do have a mouse with the ball, remove the ball and clean it well with soap and water. Look at the rollers in the mouse. They will probably have dark lines on the rollers. Use your fingernail or a pocketknife to scrape away the dark lines which is actually a gummy build up. Reinstall the ball. Better yet, chuck it and buy an optical mouse. The problem you describe sounds more like a control panel setting, though. While Windows versions vary a little, if you click on 'Start', 'Control Panel', 'Hardware' you should find 'mouse' or 'pointers'.
Check the settings here. If that doesn't help, in the control panel, click on 'Systems and Security' then Systems. Click on 'Device Manager' and find 'Mice and pointing devices'. Find your mouse in the listed devices and click on the 'driver' tab. From there you can try two things. First click on 'rollback driver'. If it says there is no prior driver or it doesn't help, you can click on 'uninstall'. After clicking on 'uninstall' (leaving the mouse plugged in) restart the computer. The mouse will reinstall when restarting. If none of this helps, you could try to download and install a new mouse driver.

Thanks for all the replies, I know your time is valuable.
I am talking about clicking on links, etc. only one click required.
now it often takes two or more.
I have a Logitech laser wireless mouse, mod 700, that I like
because of the extra buttons.
I was going to replace it when just now I tried to login on the computer
and I had to press the enter key more than once.
the comp is a top end HP I got at WalMart about a year ago.
Im running Windows 7 and it updates automatically.
could there be some process running that just slows things way down?
I dont use disk index and have Zone Alarm firewall and antivirus.

Have you added or deleted anything lately? Who is your internet provider?

I doubt that problem is caused by hardware. Well, you can try to install new battery, on the bottom should be a latch that opens battery compartment. If it won't help try to check your mouse settings:
Start->Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Devices and Printers->your mouse device it should open a dialog to configure settings for your mouse. You can check buttons assignments, wheel assignments etc...

Hit ctl + alt + del. Then select Task Manager.

Select the Process Tab.Check to see if a process is using a large percentage of cpu. If so, post the name of the process and we can see what it is. The fact that your mouse and keyboard are not responding make me think that a process is taking up so much CPU that it is causing delays in mouse and keyboard response.

Zonealarm has an antivirus? I wonder how old. If your computer is a 64 bit system then running 32 bit software is going to slow it down. But it souds like something is running in the background and it doesn't sound nice. I would try different antivirus software and do a complete scan on your system. Download from trusted sources. There are sites which advertise antivirus software but are actually not. They act as real software but its a hidden trojan. There are dozen of legit antimalware, ex:

SuperAntimalware
Avast
Spybot (slow but okay for complete scans)
CCleaner
PC Tools ThreatFire
...

I don't like Norton, Kasperesky(sp), or any program that installes itself deep within the system so that you can't completely uninstall it.

Are both your keyboard and mouse, wireless? Do they use the older style receiver with a cable? A lot of times, these need to be moved out from behind obstacles in order to work reliably. If this is the case, try to relocate the receiver to be more line of sight with the keyboard and mouse.

Since you bought the computer a year ago, I would assume it came with a mouse and keyboard if it's a desktop. have you tried those yet? If it's a laptop and you're using an external mouse and keyboard, have you tried the on-board keyboard and touchpad?
