It was pointed out that on the label of my 29-5's box had SB and meant the revolver should be square butt.

Under "Stock" on label, does it refer to stocks (grips), frame, or either? I found several 29-5 revolver labels that are round butt guns with the modified square butt Hogue grips marked SB. Found one marked PM and it may be very simple but can't find what it means. Anyone know?

Looking at the codes that can be used: SBG, SG, SB, TS, RB, PM, CG, HB, HR, PC, RBG (ones I found and in the catalog) it looks as if it can be either. An example we see a lot is TS (target stocks).

What's the correct answer?

If you have a copy of The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, vol 4, turn to pages 200-201 for a listing of revolver feature codes. There are over 150 codes listed and should be read in context depending on which feature you're looking at. For example, CS is combat stocks but is also for stainless steel cylinder or HB can be heavy barrel or Hogue Bantam grips.

I saw your other thread with these photos.

New to me 29-5 with 6" barrel

S&W did a number of short run specials for various distributors in the mid-1990's. They were building 29-5's with both round and square butt grip frames, depending on the variation. Square butt frames were discontinued in 1995-6, except for the "Classics" series with the false upper sideplate screw.

The product code on your label (101205) indicates a Dealer Special made in 1994, but it had a 6" tapered barrel and an unfluted cylinder. Only 9 were made according to the SCSW 3rd edition. That's a really odd combination!

Yours obviously has a fluted cylinder and standard 6" barrel. Either the info in the SWCA is incorrect, or S&W produced a different run of Specials using that same product code. I'd guess your gun left the factory with a round butt grip frame, fluted cylinder and conventional barrel. You're smart to get a letter; it should be interesting!

The product code for your 629 Classic (103636) is listed in the SCSW as 5" S FL IFS SG WO DT AS 2001.
I believe that translates to:
5" Barrel
Stainless
Full Lug
Interchangeable Front Sight
Synthetic Grips (Hogue Square Butt Conversion grips)
White Outline Rear Sight
Drilled and Tapped (Scope Mount)
Adjustable Sights

The "PM" on your label under "Stock" makes me wonder if it signifies Pachmayr. I do know that the original 629 Mountain Revolver came with Pachmayr Grippers.
