I see posts on this forum about slow internet speeds and viruses from time to time.

Now I'm no expert but I think if we all contribute our tips and tricks for maintaining our computers, maybe there will be less headaches for others. Share your secrets!!;)

Leave your computer on!! Set your programs to update automatically when your sleeping!

Some programs are capable of several different tasks such clearing your search history, deleting cookies, defrag the hard drive, update programs such as Flash Player, Java, Windows, etc......

Scan for viruses and malware using reputable software. Download MalwareBytes or Spybot to scan for malware and other malicious software.

Check your internet speed once in a while. Powering cycling your router may clear things up if you're running slow.

Anyone else?:o

Registry errors will cause long boot-up times and other problems. Use a utility like CCleaner regularly to tidy things up.

OK What does this mean? Good or Bad

Ping 80 Ms

Download Speed 0.64Mbps

Upload Speed 0.13 Mbps

It's quite a bit slower compared to most high speed connections. That said, I used to have 1Mbps service from Comcast a few years ago and it worked ok for Internet browsing, e-mail and Internet radio so I'm guessing you can navigate this Forum without much difficulty?

Here's what I'm getting now with Comcast.

Kanewpadle,

Nice list. For Windows users you might add to your list Format C: :D

Keep your cookies and cache dumped every few days. I have dumped them several times in one day.
Keep all add-on programs updated, like Adobe and Java. Set them to auto update.
Keep Windows updated.
Keep your browser(s) updated.
Keep your Antivirus updated- definitely better to set it to auto-update. Mine scans EVERY day at 3 am.
Every few months use a good temp file cleaner. You'll be amazed at how many files are NOT removed by clearing the cache! I like Oldtimer's:

Once a year run it thru the dishwasher. ;)

Good advice, but....
I gave that program a try. It cleaned 1.5Gb of files off, but it also activated an undocumented software controlled switch on my Toshiba P745 laptop and shut off the wireless internet. It took me an hour of Google searching and some blind luck to get it restored. Not gonna' take a chance on using that utility again!
