Florida has their act together. I submitted my application for a non-resident Florida CCW license by mail on October 14th. Their online tracking system showed it was approved on November 5th and it was in my hands on November 10th. Very impressive.

In contrast, years ago, my NY application took 8 months.

It's nice to hear that your Florida experience was a pleasant one. Like many states, we have our flaws, but concealed carry permits is not one of them.

Is the purpose of a non-resident CCW so you can carry in FLA when you visit there? We (LA) have a reciprocity agreement with FLA so we can carry there when we visit w/o getting a non-resident.

Actually I got mine so I could carry in my home state. Seems a couple local Chiefs decided they didn't like the concealed carry law and did an appeal to the courts which took about a year. Court said the law was ok and the legislature fixed the complaint any way. Had to do with money don't you know!

I did the same, for the same reason. Renewed once, then MO law took over and I let it go. Easy as it could be. Props to Florida.

My guess it allows part time residents and visitors that either do not have a CCW from their own state or CCW reciprocity to legally carry concealed while visiting Dixie,

Puts our indigenous nefarious lowlifes on notice an out of state license plate does not = "Unarmed target",
Also saves the state some electricity

Edited to add: years ago all our rental cars had license plates beginning with the letter "Z" and of course it didnt take long for criminals to figure out those drivers were unarmed tourists with a wallet full of vacation dollars .....those rental "Z" tags finally changed to normal tags.

Louisiana has reciprocity with Florida and recognizes non-resident FL licenses. However, as you probably know, Louisiana requires their residents to have an LA license.

You can carry in a lot of states, at least 36, with a non-resident FL license. You can get a Utah license at the same time which is good where FL is not recognized, including Washington (state) and Minnesota. Florida is one of them too.

When traveling, you must know and obey each state's law regarding concealed carry, not that of the issuing state. In particular, know where carry is forbidden (e.g., open carry only in a Montana bar) and when you are required to notify if stopped by law enforcement.

I'm gonna be in upstate NY all next week and I'm going to feel totally naked up there! Former FL cracker here, but I do love GA's gun laws! Suppressed hunting anyone?? :D

I luv livin in the 'Gunshine State"!! Scum Bags think twice about messin with U here. They R never sure whose packin.

On the contrary, I doubt they think about it at all. Not exactly crime free here.

Yes, the Fla. non-resident allows me to carry in Fla. and provides me with reciprocity in WVA, VA,NC, & GA. PA does not honor the Fla. non-resident CCW and S. Carolina does not honor NY or Fla. non-resident CCW. Prior to entering SC I must unload my gun, empty all magazines, lock my gun separate from my ammo, lock my ammo and ONLY stop for gas and/or food. Locked gun & ammo must NOT be accessible my driver or passenger(s). If I spend overnight I have committed a crime according to SC law.

im from florida when i read SC laws i stopped the car before i entered state did what grandpadan did and took my gun apart and put it in different places in car soon as i drove through SC to NC which respects Florida CCW i put it back togather and loaded it and kept on truckin

I forget who said "An armed society is a polite society". Still waiting to see it happen down here. Glad, however, things worked out for the OP.

Robert Heinlein, the science fiction writer, I believe, put those words into the mouth of Lazarus Long, his interstellar space cop. I'm pretty sure but I could be wrong.

I am not sure what the poster's problem above was in South Carolina but SC, like CO, MI (I think), AND FL, only recognize permits from other states carried by residents from those states. So, whereas I can freely carry in SC using my TX CHL, a NYer carrying a FL license cannot carry in SC. It's weird, I know, but that's how it is set up presently in those 4 states.

The Texas website doesn't indicate resident licenses only in re FL or SC but the rules found on the maps on the phone "app" called "Legal Heat" do make the distinction.

they don't call FL the "Gunshine state" for nothing... i do reside here and am not a huge fan of the state. that said the 2 other states i lived in for most of my adult life wouldn't issue. those being ME and the dreaded Culifornia. we pay a sunshine tax for a reason!
