A friend has a daughter relocating to Maryland from college to take a job, this individual has already purchased a weapon for her to carry. My question is; does Maryland issue concealed carry permits? I seem to remember reading that Maryland does not believe in an individuals right to self defense and has no agreements with any other states for reciprocation of concealed carry. Would appreciate an explanation from any and all knowing sources. Thank you.

Marxiland is VERY restrictive as to who may carry. They are considered a "may issue" state vs. a "shall issue" state.

It is a long and exhaustive process in Marxiland to even get a ccw. To obtain, you must show cause/need. Examples provided by the State include curriers who handle large sums of cash, jewelers, etc.

Even if you can get thru the process and get a ccw, it is only valid if you are carrying while in the course of the need/cause activity indicated for the purpose of the permit.

For example, if you are a gem distributor with a ccw, you may legally carry while out-n-about visiting various jewery shops to hock your wares. You may NOT carry if you are not engaged in the need/casue activity - such as going to the movies with the Mrs.

Marxiland has reciprocity with NO other State...

Your friend's daughter is basically out of luck in Marxiland...

Appreciate it pasifikawv, the information is very thorough. I'll try to copy this and the inclusions for him to read. You are too kind.

Glad to be of help.... That's kinda what the forum is all about...

The application from MD and the summary from the NRA will provide better info than my entered text. Upon reading the application it appears I may have been mistaken about persons fortunate enough to have a MD ccw being prohibited from carrying when not engaged in the need/cause activity...

I did read an interpretation of MD code that suggested such a prohibition may exist, but I didn't see anything about it in the application documents...

Still, it is nearly impossible for a regular Joe/Jane to get a ccw in MD...

If your friend's daughter gets a part-time job where her duties include making cash deposits and her employer is willing to provider her with copies of cash deposit rec'ts and summary of responsibilities, she may be able to satisfy the need/cause requirement...
