Colt Commander, light weight.

Glocks do carry nice.......light weight, lots of boolits for their size, no sharp edges.....

fwiw I find the subcompacts with short grips easy to shoot well too

Emory

S&W 4513 - .45acp alloy frame with ss slide

S&W 3913 - 9mm alloy frame with ss slide

or 3914 - 9mm alloy frame with steel slide

Sig P230 - .380 alloy frame with steel or ss slide

Bersa Thunder - .380 alloy frame with steel slide

Colt Agent - .38 special 6 shot revolver alloy frame steel cylinder and barrel

All excellent suggestions already #1!
If I might respectfully add the compacts in the M&P S&W line as well.

An alloy frame Commander would give you the same manual of arms and use the same mags.

However, I'd suggest getting a S&W J frame .38 snub. They make handy BUGs and everyone should have one.

You might also want to looke for an FNP in either 9mm or .40. They're something of a sleeper bargain and will come with three mags. I believe that some versions now come with a frame mounted manual safety.

Well, I carry one of three things. An alloy framed Commander, my favorite. A 3" micro 1911, when I need something just a little smaller and yes, it runs like the proverbial sewing machine. Or, a J frame which is what I carry all day in my shop because it's small, light and tolerates the dusty environment.

Any of them need a good holster and belt.

I'm not sure anybody has really improved much over the S&W Chief's Special mostly because it is small and light enough that you're never tempted to leave it at home.

....if 380 will do....check out the Mustang and Mustang II from Colt....

Also, the old 1903 model ACP in 32 or 380 both carry very nicely.

Lighter, smaller, easier to conceal.....a Glock 36 fits that description. Since you already have a 1911, an alloy frame Commander size 1911 would be a logical choice.

Personally, I am very comfortable with my Kimber Pro Carry, Commander size, alloy frame, .45 ACP, night sights, 28 oz. weight. Anytime that I can wear an outer garment, that is my personal choice.

During very hot weather, when an outer garment is not desirable, I have found that the Kahr P40 stainless .40 S&W (polymer frame, 16.1 oz. weight) works well. Disappears under a golf shirt, but still delivers 7 rounds of 180-grain into a 4" group at 25 feet when I do my part right.

And my old S&W Model 37 Airweight Chief Special in .38 Special will never be far away from me! Too many years of being together!

Bottom line is this: the pistol you have with you will always be better than the one you left at home.

As a holster maker, I tell customers all the time that everything is a compromise (concealability, comfort, accessibility are the factors when it comes to a holster). Same reasoning applies. If it isn't concealable, you probably won't use it. If it isn't comfortable, you won't want to use it. If it isn't accessible, you might as well not have it with you.

Stay safe.
