Recently reacquired six-gun fever (again) and purchased a police trade-in M&P Model 10. Trying to educate myself on all different versions of M&P's. Saw a pre-model 10 today at local range/gun shop that's in excellent condition. A lady had just bought it. The serial number starts with a six, no letter prefix. I believe this means it's a pre war gun. Is this correct?

You'll need to be more precise.before anyone can answer your question. Please provide at a minimum the caliber and serial number - in form of, say, 6458xx if you do not want to provide the full number. A few pictures would also help. But without a letter prefix, it would be prior to 1941.

Thanks for the info guys. The gun is .38 special, 6 digit serial number, starts with six, no letters. Just wanted to see if I was in the ballpark on the age. Someone took really good care of it. Unfortunately no box or papers. Thanks again.

The WWII era begins with the So. African order of may 1940 at 685XXX, thereabouts.
