Convert 32-20 to 32 H&R

Somehow I figure if I had another 32 custom built, Smith would bring out a classic 32. I'd buy one, being built with CNC it should be a great shooter. I would even buy a 616, would be great. I have an extra set of KB grips waiting for a Special K frame of some sort. If I do a 32 Contender, it would be an accurate offhand single shot. MGM makes nice barrels for the Contender. Wish I had Hondo's ability, I would do some of the conversion work myself. Larry

Larry,

If one starts with a 32 H&R chamber, extending it for the 327 Mag takes every little skill. The reamer is just under $100. The chamber is extended about 1/10" and .018" is removed over that short distance. The reamer is kept in proper alignment by the pilot bushing in the cyl throats and the majority of the length of the chamber which is the same diameter as the reamer. The slight amount of material removed is easily done by hand using a T handle and cutting oil.

I'll start out by mentioning what a beautiful group of .32 S&W's pictured on this thread.

I was very lucky to find a fairly rare, Special Edition Ruger Vaquero with a .32 H&R mag cylinder, which in it's self is really versatile, and it came with a 32-20 cylinder. It seems to shoot most anything in .32 caliber. I am not versed in the technical aspects of the OP's idea of a conversion, but I think Ruger got it right on this Vaquero. I don't know why they didn't make more of them.

Low market demand at the time for such a heavy gun in 32 caliber. On the mid frame Vaquero, they would sell a great many today.

We did have a lot of snow here in Bagram. I brought the thread forward since it seems the 32 and 327 magnum are getting more attention. The model 632's have jumped in price, almost as much as the 631's.
I was able to pick up the 32 barrel and a 32 cylinder, and am looking for a k 38 FRAME.

The poll is up and running on the 1980-present Forum. Please be sure and stop by to express your feelings! :D

I am not a fan of K frame .32's. I have a 631, a Ruger SP 101 and a S&W .32 M&P. I would much rather have a model 35 converted to .32 S&W Long. I have a pre 34 which has had a 6 inch model 35 barrel installed on it and it is one of my favorite guns. I think I will check with Bowen and see about the feasibility of a conversion.

41 fan,

Before you go to all the trouble to build that conversion, I've got both an original pre-War Regulation Police Target Model and a regular pre-War Reg. Pol., both with 6" barrels in 32 S&W Long. If you aren't happy with that 631, mayhaps we can strike some sort of a deal. I was planning on putting a post-War J-frame target sight on the latter to make a sort of a 32 caliber "Model 35." Are you interested? Drop me a PM.

41 fan,

The expense to convert the Mod 35 to .32 Long besides the initial cost of the 35 is the barrel; at least $200 to rebore the 22 6" barrel. There are no 6" 32 barrels with the rib for the Mod 35.

Froggie's pre war 6" 32 Regulation Police target is ready made. Or his non-target would be the simplest and least expensive model to start with, and just have adj sights installed.
