I called my local gun range about shooting my M&P-15 using either 5.56 or .223 and they said no but that for $10 bucks I could rent one of their bolts and magazines that would convert it to shoot .22LR.

So this morning I bought 550 rounds of 22LR at Walmart as well as 100 rounds of WWB for my FS M&P9. I made it to the range about 9:30 a.m. and got one of the 22LR bolts as well as the magazine. The magazine looks about the same as my Magpul mags except it enables you to load 22LR.

I then went downstairs to the manual range and proceeded to load the magazine with what I later found to be 20 rounds by hand. Man this was a real pain sticking these little bullets into the magazine one by one, and really messy to your fingers. Next I loaded the full magazine and proceeded to fire at about 10 yards with fairly good results considering I was free standing and firing the weapon. a couple in the bullseye and most all the rest in the 9 ring so not too bad.

But I knew it was gonna be a long day with 500 rounds to load only 20 at a time and only one magazine, so after about 100 rounds I decided to shoot my 9mm handgun which I did with decent results after putting some shoot n see patches on the bullseye. I must say I was better with the 9 than the 22 but I am primarily a handgun shooter anyway.

I then went ahead and shot the remainder of the rounds I had for the 22LR and noticed that regardless of the range of the target that the point of aim needed to be higher than using the .223 or 5.56 and then I get home and clean it with Break Free and it took several patches before it even looked reasonably clean, it does still have some carbon but I will fire some .223 and 5.56 through it tomorrow at a different range where I can try to be sure that the gas tube is not blocked from *** the dirty stuff the 22LR put into the weapon.

Don't know how many others have done this but would like to hear about it. I was not that impressed, I'll stick with either 5.56 or .223 at least after I get rid of the other 250 rounds of 22LR!

I have a conversion kit. I have a 15-22 as well, but I wanted to be able to shoot 22lr out of my MP15 also. They aren't meant for accuracy as the Ar15's twist rate is not ideal for the 22lr. They are more for getting in trigger time and training on the cheap. If you want accuracy you could get a dedicated 22lr upper or the 15-22. Oddly enough the mag that came with my kit is super easy to load. The mags for the 15-22 are harder on my fingers than the Blackdog mag is.

Spring for a 15-22 and be done with it. Alternatively a dedicated .22LR upper.

Using a CMMG conversion unit was not only iffy with mediocre accuracy, but cost me a 5.56 barrel for as yet undetermined reasons. Searching may pull up that post.

Like a Toyota the 15-22 just does it's job without fuss or bother; not cheap but way better in the long run.

Of course I might just be a mall ninja and making this all up.

Yeah, shooting .22 through a 5.56 barrel is not really the way to go.
It leads up the barrel, will clog your gas port, and you're shooting a .22 out of a 1 in 9 twist which is way to tight for a .22 (most .22s are 1 in 16).
I built a dedicated upper out of a cut down 5.56 barrel (1 in 12) that had a bulge near the muzzle, and a conversion kit, just so I wouldn't ruin a good set up.
Works OK for plinking, but I have real .22s for accuracy work too.

^^^Truth. The 15-22 is the best option.

I never liked the idea of firing .22lr rimfire through my AR15 via the bolt/magazine swap in. The AR15 barrel rifling isn't suited to .22lr + the amount of cleaning needed after shooting .22lr is a pain.

Dedicated .22lr upper is a good option, but for a few bucks more you can get a 15-22. Not that swapping out uppers is difficult, but I'd rather have two rifles than just one.

The twist is different, the bore diameter is different. It will function, but don't expect good results.

I don't do "conversion" on anything, even with my handguns. 22's are too dirty and I have a few real nice 22 plinkers for just that. Get a 15-22.
