Convince me to sell my Glocks and buy M&Ps to replace them

Groo here
Carried glock cause I had to...
Learned to shoot but never liked it much [only got 5 or so]
Hate the grip on the 10mm/45acp but got a G40 6in 10mm
cause of price and barrel length...[ like I said I learned to shoot them]
The M&P fit much better [even the 45] and the shield is just great..
Shoot them and decide.
Ps I am trained to the 1911 grip angle so Glock is just wrong...

I like the M&P's because the fit my hands well, the grip angle suits what I am used to (used to shoot 1911's a lot) & I can shoot lead bullets that I reload. Beyond that there isn't much of a selling point to M&P's... I like mine but, Glocks are fine too..

Why? It appears you like glocks and that is a great thing and you must be accurate and confident in their performance. If you are looking to purchase something different then I might suggest a full size 2.0 in your caliber flavor.

To me it would make no sense to switch to M&P's since you already love Glocks. I much prefer Glocks, but it's just what feels comfortable to me.
Exactly. Why change if you've found something that has worked extremely well for you for 25 years? The Glock fanatics that I know would sooner sell their kids into slavery than think about going to a different gun. They are that firm and unwavering in their love for Glock perfection. :)

I Did it, had fun with the M&P pistols had a few shields, compacts, full size, pro, and eventually when back to Glock. Glock simplicity is amazing, and the aftermarket parts is even better.

Glock does have tremendous aftermarket support. Also, when the zombie apocalypse occurs, the streets will be littered with Glocks and Glock magazines. I know this to be true because I watched the first few seasons of The Walking Dead.

I have been a Glock guy since 1991 with the first gen G22 or I guess it was a gen 2, since there never was a gen 1. I shoot GSSF 2-3 times a year. I have owned a bunch of 17's over the years (my favorite). Selling and upgrading when a new gen comes out, after the bugs are fixed.

A month ago I had 4 Glocks. Two 17.4's, a 26.4 and a 19.5. The Gen 5 19 was my latest Glock purchase in October 2018.

I pretty much hated the Gen 5 19. I had not owned a 19 in a while. I wanted to try and carry it again, since the 26 was just as fat. Well I missed the finger groves. Without them I understood the "BLOCK" comments. The ambi-slide lock on the Gen5 looks horrible, like an afterthought but it also sticks out more then any other generation. With my high grip I would bump it while shooting, locking back the slide with rounds still in the mag. I had to adjust my grip, on all my glocks to make it work. The finish on the slide was super glossy and slippery. I had issues with sights as they changed them and gen 4 sights were hit or miss in terms of the right height or not. Vendors were confused as well.

I then tried out a M&P 2.0. Mistake. I had tried out the Gen1 M&P 9mm and really liked how they felt in my hand but the trigger really threw me off. Also at that time there was all kinds of issues with the M&P 9mm, accuracy, lock up etc. The Glocks I have had, have been stupid reliable. Anyhow the 2.0 felt so great in my hand and shot well. I shot it a bunch that day. The combination of that and my hate of the Gen 5 19, got the best of me. I sold the 19 and bought a 4.25inch and a Shield 2.0 both in 9mm on the same day. I wanted a single stack 9mm for CCW.

After shooting both a bunch. I have also sold my 26. I gave my son, a new Marine, one of my 17.4's. I am keeping my last 17.4 since I like shooting it and may want to continue some GSSF. My primary focus will be the M&P 2.0 series. I will probably get a 5inch to shoot in matches at my gun club. Right now I am trying out holsters and sights.

I am glad I waited until the 2.0 to jump in. I like them a lot. It is also nice to support a made in the USA product!

What is the aftermarket missing when it comes to M&P??

Granted the only thing I really look for aftermarket wise is sights and holsters and the M&P is well supported in that area.

Also what simplicity does the Glock have that the M&P does not have or should I say how is the M&P more complicated?

No Glock knuckle or pig nose for starters.

Glock knuckle? Pig nose? What?

Triggers, barrels, magazines, springs...you can get every shingle part on most websites, even ebay. To get a recoil spring for the M&P you needed to get it from S&W.

I can take apart the whole Glock just with punch tool..if you ever have taken apart an M&P you should know it is not that simple.

wellthough1 Sad, 25 years with one brand . I'm not going to talk you in to anything . I have 8 different brands of handguns in the house after trading off the one glock I tried g19.5 . Just can't find a reason to keep one around .

Now if your asked what do I carry ?? Might be a m&p 4.25 40sw with thumb safety and 3lb 10oz apex fss trigger kit ,. Or a colt lw commander 45acp . Or a sig p320c 40sw that I did carry for 4.5 years . My old long term fall back is a a s&w 669 . I use a dan wesson revolver since '76 to hunt with and carried kahrs for 15 years . My wife move her old long term edc , an m&p9c to the safe for a Kimber ultra 9mm .

Get out there and try what you can and make an adult choice as this tread could be seen on any number of other handgun forums .

Not one brand only. I've always owned some Ruger and S&W revolvers. I also own a Sig P226 9mm and a Beretta 92SF.

I am in the same boat. I’m used to and have carried Glocks for almost 28 years. (I’ve tried the M&P 1.0 along with numerous other striker pistols.). Granted they may have better ethos overall than the Glock, but none of their track records rival the Glock. Also I’m so used to the Glock Trigger everything else causes my to dip my shots.

Before I retire I may pick up the M&P 2.0 Compact 3.6 to try it. It will need an Apex trigger kit though...

I was in the same boat. Having had 1.0 S&W pistols and having liked them, I still got rid of all I had and went back to Glock exclusively (for polymer guns).
Then, the 2.0 S&W pistols came along. I bought the 9mm 3.6" and immediately got rid of my G26. I was so impressed with 3.6", I bought the 9mm 2.0 5", the 45 ACP 4.6", a new Shield 45 and a Shield 9mm. I have only three Glocks remaining; my old Detective and off-duty G19, my G48, and my G43. None of those get carried or shot much in comparison to the M&Ps. I found the M&P ergonomics to be much better, as well as the trigger.

Do whatever. I'm no Glock fanatic but I respect them a lot and have had one since fairly early, a Gen 2 G21. That one is fairly blocky but I didn't find my Gen 3 G23 to be uncomfortable.

I then got a G27. Didn't like that at all. Can't get enough of my hand on it. Sure I can use an extended mag but then I may as well just carry the G23.

I have a Gen5 G19 MOS and I like that one too. I have a Gen 4 G40. The finger grooves don't really fit but there's enough grip length that I just ignore them. I like the gun.

As for the Smiths... My Dept had gone to Glocks but then went to the Gen 1 M&Ps. That only lasted a few years and then they went back to Glocks. I think the Gen 1 M&Ps were considered junk for several reasons. The finish wasn't near as durable as the Glocks, and there were other issues. I was grandfathered in with my 629 so I personally missed all of that. I actually only carried my personally owned G21 on duty while my 629 was off getting worked on.

When on the boats I carried my 669 as I didn't want to wear an anchor. I don't believe I had any Glocks at the time.

But otherwise I've been a wheelgun guy for duty carry during most of my career, with a few short lived misdirections.

I do now carry a Shield V1 9 pretty often. It's a decent little gun and I have confidence in it. Not to upset anybody here but I kind of consider it in the same league as my PF9, which for me has also been a reliable little gun. Although I think the G43 is a higher quality gun.

I will say that from my experience with the Shield 9 it appears Smith has definitely improved the quality of their finish over that of the Gen 1 M&Ps. It get sweat wet frequently and cleaned and oiled infrequently and is holding up well.

Other than that I really can't imagine the newer compact M&Ps being enough better than the G19/G23 family to be worth changing. They work and work well and feel OK to me in my hand.

I'd imagine hand size and type plays a big part. I have a fairly large hand but not huge. I guess my fingers are fairly fat compared to many but nothing like the sausage fingers I've seen on some guys.

All that to repeat what's already been kinda already said. Try before you buy and get whatever floats your boat.

I guess that was a pretty pointless post. Sorry!

Dont dump the Glocks.
They are fine pistols
17 & 19 are arguably the most popular (common) semi autos in the world.
SHTF scenario..
spare parts are more than abundant
common mags
a snap to field strip and maintain
Bottom line: they work

On the other hand
I believe the 19 is a substantially overpriced @ >$500
I bought my M&P 2.0 (9mm) at sub $400 , out the door.
I shoot my 2.0 , much better than I shoot a G19 , why?
The footprint adopts much better to my hand.
Its quite that simple.

I can find recoil springs all over the place.

S&W M&P 1.0 2.0 Recoil Guide Rod Spring Assembly 9mm 40S&W 357sig Full Size BLUE | eBay

3-4 other places had them as well. I just bought 6 mags for my two M&P's. Two from Brownells, two from Grab a Gun and two from gunmagwharehouse to see had the better price delivery etc. Brownells had the best sell on the full size, gunmagwharehouse on the shield.

Triggers, Apex and Agency both make a few. The Apex triggers I have shot on a few M&P's is better than any aftermarket Glock trigger I have shot.

Barrels I found a bunch, Apex, StormLake, Wilson, True precision.

I get it, Glock is way more supported but it is not like with M&P you can't find most of what you need, and multiple options, like a CZ or FN pistol.

As far as working on them, I have broken mine down (full size) and yes it is slightly easier on a Glock if you want to take the slide apart because of the rear sight on the M&P and the roll pin for the extractor. I have had some tight pins on a Glock requiring a real punch and hammer to get them out.

I would not dump all of the Glocks, but if you move to the M&P and really like it, I am not a fan of having to know and be efficient with two different guns. The Glock grip angle and trigger are different enough that I would not like to bounce back and forth a lot. I have friends that have all kinds of different handguns and they are great with none of them because they are so different and the move around too much.

SHTF I would be more worried about ammo and not shooting the gun unless I had too so as not to draw attention. Field stripping is identical, mags are common on the M&P in terms of the 17round, either gen 1 or gen 2 will fit in the smaller double stack M&P's but I get the fact that you might not be able to run down a street without tripping over empty Glock mags on the ground in a SHTF senario.
