Today I had a speaking engagement in a small town about 45 minutes away. Missus Fan went along, and of course made me late.
I was trying to make up time on a County road. Topped a hill at 75 MPH and met a Trooper. He turned around and pulled me over. Had a smile on his face as he took my license. I said I was in a hurry to get to my meeting. He said he was only gonna write the ticket for 5 MPH over. Said it would be quicker if I came back to his car. I was carrying my Glock 23 on my right hip, a spare mag on my left and my M340 PD in my left pocket. I got out and said "I just want to tell you I have a carry permit and am doing so now". He shrugged and said " just keep it where it is". Went to the car and he asked if I was right or left handed. Confused I asked why. He said so he could position the computer for my signature. Told him I'm a righty.
I then told him my backup is in my left pocket, a 12 ounce .357 Magnum. He was impressed. Asked if he wanted to see it and he said sure. Pulled it out, CAREFULLY and opened the cylinder. He really liked it.
I think my attitude was why I got good treatment.

Good for you !

I must say that while I endeavor to obey the law at all times I have been pulled over 3 times in the last 20 years, All of the officers were polite and obliging after I showed them the respect and courtesy they deserve...something rare in todays thug society...

Another good tip is to roll the windows down and have both hands on the wheel looking the officer in the eyes as he approaches your vehicle instead of fishing around in the glovebox.

Good thing you weren't in MO. 20 over they can take you to the PoPo station for a cell visit if they chose to. And some small towns do.

Glad it went well for you over all. I'm not sure I would have went the direction you did with the whole conversation beyond the initial inform. If he wanted to chat more about it after that, then follow his lead. The important thing is that he was fine with you carrying and you didn't give him cause for alarm.

He certainly was generous in the cited speed.

I never would have informed if I wasn't getting out of the car. I've read Massad Ayoob for years and I took one of his classes. He always advises informing them if you get out of the car.
This guy was really cool. He was very nice, and that's why I, jokingly, told him about my BUG. He seemed interested. Said he carries a new Bodyguard. Think the Iowa Troopers carry S&W M&Ps.
Guess they should be Forum members.

Got a question about this. I keep my wallet in my right rear pocket and my Shield on my right hip (usually 4:00). Even if I'm not asked to leave the vehicle, should I inform a LEO before reaching for my wallet?

On a side note, a friend got pulled over for doing 15mph over, on a motorcycle, informed the copy before reaching in his bag for his wallet, cop was cool and didn't give him a citation.

I've been pulled over multiple times and each time the cop has been very respectful. I've always been respectful of LEO's.

I was Pulled over By a County Sherrif's Officer 5am 1st morning of Deer Season for 45 mph in a 35 mph Zone & Was Carrying MY Model 60 IWB I informed The Officer I was a CCW Permit Holder & was carrying He said Just Keep it Holstered & there would Be no Problem He Ran My Drivers License & Came Back To The Truck & Said toHave good Luck in the Deer Woods & watch My Speed No Ticket!

Yeah, there are some good guys out there.

I was pulled over in Hamilton County TN years back when I was living there. Hamilton County Sheriff got me going 50 something in a 35. I was actually on my way back from the range and had my 696 on my hip and a few more in cases in the back seat.

As he walked up to the car I leaned out with both hands on the side of the car and told him I had a weapon on my hip. He said "You got a permit?", and I said yes. He then asked for my owners card and I told him it's in the glove box and then there was a pause......................then he said "go ahead, get it".

He ran my info and came back to the car and he asked me "So, tell me, why do you feel the need to carry a weapon?" We got to talking about all kinds of stuff from constitutional rights to what guns we like and disliked.

He let me off with a warning! Gosh, I do miss living in TN!

Good on you for the pleasant encounter. LEOs are just people too and have a job to do. The ones that are close to me (family) are all gun lovin good guys. We all just want to do our jobs to the best of our ability no matter what business we're in.

Nope. 60 MPH in a 55 zone. $87.
75 MPH woulda been $200.
Jim

Good thing that you weren't in Rahway,NJ.
The whole town is a speed trap, and I honestly believe that ticketing is a major source of their revenue.
I was ticketed for 49 in a 30 zone,an industrial park area, where it really wasn't excessive. If he had written it for 48mph,it would have been $85,but no,he wrote it for 49mph,which made it $200.Too far for me to dispute it in their court.
No good deed goes unpunished-I was mostly visiting that town to check out a Garand for a friend who couldn't get there.Got to the shop, and the clerk couldn't find it or contact the owner.Of course, after I got home,my friend called about it,and the owner claimed that he left it in a prominent place where it could be found.

^^^That is not always true. Some cops clearly enjoy being a holes, regardless of the "citizen's" attitude, and no matter the courtesy given. I speak from experience.

Edited to add: referencing 66 shooter's post.
