Corbon .38 Spcl. 158 gr. +p LSWCHP

Anyone ever use/shoot this long discontinued round in the past? I always wanted to try it as I read that it turned an honest 1K fps in a snubby as does today's much lauded Buffalo Bore.

I never heard of Corbon using a lead SWC-HP-- the only Corbon loads I've ever heard about used powerball or similar designer/trick bullets.

I didn't chrono it, but it seemed quite hot. Some guns liked it, some
didn't. Still got a few around somewhere.

I used it as a carry load for a M649 for a few years.
The only thing shot with it, besides paper and an occasional steel plate,
was a young doe I finished with a neck shot.
Went through the neck, leaving a .38 caliber wound channel, and into the ground. I dug for it for a few minutes but never found it.

I don't know about these days, but in the past Corbon ammo would usually chrono at the advertised velocity. 38 +P 110 gr JHP advertised at 1300 fps, and did so from same 3" 65. I would hope the snub nose that got a true 1,000 fps from that 158gr lead bullet was shot out of a K frame or larger.

I have shot a steel J frame snub with 158 lead bullets at 948 fps and it is no picnic...............

851 fps has 254 ft/lbs of energy and what I have setted on as my maximum SD load for a J frame for a fast second shot if needed but 822 @ 237 is close to a factory load in a tight weapon.

Even the 800 fps @ 224 is nothing to sneeze at and most can control this recoil for repeated shots while practicing and Winchester is a high quality ammo that is trusted by many.

These fps were out of "my snub"..............your fps may be very different.

I wonder whose cast bullet they used back then. They use Cast Performance bullets today in their Hunting line of ctgs.

We used Remington bullets back when we loaded the 38 with the 158 gr LHP. The reason we stopped production was that the swagged bullets were so soft, we ended up with many rejects due to damage of the bullet nose when loading.

I'd like to see a photo of the 20 rd box that states that it is a +P+ loading also. We didn't sell in 20 rd boxes 20 years ago.

Any hope of reviving this load? Very accurate in my M 15 when in security work.

I too have a twenty round box of the +P+ 158GR LHP. The flap has #1031 and is dated MAY 23 1994. The stick on band that lists the cartridge info and wraps abound to the inside has: 14
M
21 hand written on it. Love your ammo and hope there is some way to load this ammo again. My favorite load in K frame S&W guns. Thanks, Dean

I'll dig around in my ammo cans and see if I can find my box of ammo. When I was carrying my S&W M-38 I used the Corbon load in it. I don't recall ever buying a 50 round box of any Corbon ammo, so I could be mistaken about the 20 round box it may have come in.

Here's another vote for Corbon to bring back this loading or something similar, using 158 grain lead semi-wadcutters.

I can make 'em to equal such velocities but it would be nice to be able to buy factory loads on occasion.
