I recently converted a friend over to S&W revolvers.
He just bought a 66-2 square butt with a 4" barrel.
Unfortunately it came with Pachmayr grippers.
OK for shooting, but he wants to get a set of original stocks.
According to the SCS&W it appears that they came with target
stocks, however both pictures show the gun from the left side.
Does anybody know if this gun came with the full targets,
the football cut out, or the speed loader cut out?
The serial number is AUY85xx manufactured in 1986.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Just using Google images for a 66-2 4 inch they all seem to be wearing speed loaders

Earlier 66-2s with a square butt frame would have had "football" cutout Targets, but a later one probably had the speedloader type. Why not have your friend buy both types and see which looks nicer? :)

Wood Target Stocks were common on M66-2's with 4-inch barrels. By 1986 I think it would of had the full speedloader cut out. In this era most Target Stocks had the right inside panel ink stamped with a month-day-year calendar date.

If your friend is in no rush, and it's important to have a factory "correct" stock, look for one with a date somewhere in August or September 1986. That would be perfect for this gun that likely shipped in October.

The 66-2 is a SS version of the 19-5,
4" and 6" versions of both guns would have had the speed loader cut target grips.

These are what came with the mid-80s vintage 4" square butt 66-2 I recently purchased:

Not being the original owner, I can't say for sure that they are original, but I think that they are. The right half is ink-stamped "5 9" on the inside surface. I like the look of the grips, but I promptly replaced them with some Ahrends, because they were far too big for my medium-sized hands.
