I may be traveling to Delaware for vacation soon. I'll be traveling through Maryland to get there, and I'm looking at handgunlaw.us.

Delaware does recognize my CCW permit from my home state. MD, on the other hand, is very strict, and I've learned from the website that I'll have to unload the firearm and lock it in the trunk to travel through MD.

I'm looking at the Delaware regulations for travel, seen here, and am a little confused on one section:

http://handgunlaw.us/states/delaware.pdf

I'm seeing this one clause which says:
"Note: You can't carry a concealed Firearm in a vehicle but if it is on the seat or dash then it is legal. Do not put it under the seat or in the Glove Box/Console. That is concealed. The Dash is best."

It looks to me like that clause is for "un-licensed" persons carrying in a vehicle, but I want to make sure. I plan to contact the Attorney General's office next week to verify, but could you guys look at this section and tell me how you interpret this section? Since I am licensed, and since DE recognizes my state's license, I'd rather keep the firearm concealed on me, rather than plopping it up on the dash, but I want to make sure I'm legal.

Maybe someone who lives in DE can clarify this for me.

Thanks in advance, JT

Being a MD resident I can tell you the gun laws here are ridiculous...best advice I can.give you is to lock it up until you reach Delaware...MD does not recognize any CCW permits from other states as far as I know...NRA website as well as Home would be the sites to check for verification

OP: You are referencing the section titled "without permit" for open carry in a vehicle. If you have a permit recognized by DE, this section does not apply to you. You can legally carry concealed even in a vehicle.

It's been a few years since I lived in Delaware, but Delaware was a small area of sanity. It will take you less than 60 minutes to pass thru the state. I wouldn't worry about Delaware for 2 seconds, but NJ, MD, DC, NY, MA, etc. Don't even think about taking any type of gun. Take a hunting knife (thought that might also be illegal).

IIRC handgunlaw.us has a link to the DE attorney general. It was thorough and put my mind at ease during my current business trip in DE.

Travel in the Northeast corridor/megalopolis is a non-starter if you are armed. Unless you are a retired LEO or Fed, you will not be covered. In New Jersey each round of hollow point ammo found in your possession is a separate felony.

That said, you are perfectly legal when traveling by automobile if the weapon is unloaded and locked in a case in the trunk/cargo area of your vehicle and out of your immediate reach, as you are engaged in "interstate commerce" and so protected by federal law. Stopping overnight is a gray area.

Carry a baseball, bat and glove in the car with an aerosol can of wasp & hornet spray.
