I've been torn between the 625JM and 686SSR for over a month now. Especially after watching JM's Advanced Revolver Shooting DVD.... WOW.....Jerry's Da Man
I reload for both Calibers and have plenty of brass, primers, & powder's so Ammo is no problem. Now that I'm close to retirement and live only 5 miles from a Range which is very active in IDPA and also having a nice 30 yard range set up in the back yard I figured what the Hell

so for $1610.oo Total w/tax & background check I'm haveing my Gun Shop order both Smiths. Since I won't be picking them up until I get back from Afghanistan in June, He will also make arrangements with Smith & Wesson and send the 625JM in for the Master Revolver Action package. I will most likely shoot the 625JM in ESR and use the 686SSR as a carry/woods gun or hopefully get the wife interested in shooting, the 686SSR should be just the ticket with 38sp. loads. So now I have to do research on a good lead 230 gr. cast bullet, an IDPA legal Holster, Moon Clips/Holders/loading tool, and loads that will make the 165,000 PF required for ESR. I'm open for suggestions.

And my wife thought I couldn't spend any money over here in the Sand Box

Those two revolvers are on my wish list, too.

The title of this topic is sweet, by the way. It is in the proper S&W spirit.

RickK:

Congrats on the purchase. Expecting fraternal twins is very exciting and knowing that they will be above average must only increase your anticipation of the happy event of bringing them home. 38spl.'s out of the 686 SSR are very mild and it's hard to make a bad shot. I have not tried .357's yet (working my way through +P's) but the magnums are next on my list. As you can tell, I am a fanboy of the SSR!

Stay safe over there and thanks for serving our country.

Chris

thanks so much for your service!i have both ....they are both great shooters and you will certainly enjoy!
welcome to the forum!

I've got a 4" 686+P, would it be worth it to trade up to the 686SSR?

RickK;
I have two 625's (5" 625-6 and a 4" JM Special). They are among my most used revolvers. Super special in every way.

I have two 686's - one is a 4" RB Treasury model and the other is a 6". I have a Red Dot on the six inch and it shoots like a dream. The 4" is my "bump in the night" gun and is kept next to me.

Offhand, I would say you have made a FINE choice in both revolvers.

Thanks for your service to the country. I'm looking forward to the day you tell us you are home safe.

By God now that's a REAL man talking-none of this panty-waist, Oh, I'll have to ask the wife nonsense we hear so much of on TV. By the prophet's beard, I hope you find your way safely home and live long enough to shoot both of them to where they fall apart

S&W Guy:

I would say "no". The SSR has a bead-blasted finish (nice looking, imo), a forged trigger and hammer, and a factory trigger job. If you like your 686+P then don't trade it in. You can have your gun bead-blasted and treated to a trigger job by S&W for a very reasonable fee, get some nice wood grips, and you'll be 95% of the way there. I bought the SSR because it just called to me like a mythological siren and I could not resist.

Chris

MO_Mule, I do have custom grips on my 686 from Herritts, what a great job they did. What did you pay for the SSR? I bought my 686 about 3 years ago for about $500 - think they are around $800 now.

After serving in Afghanistan I think you deserve those revolvers.
