Better research it. There are companies taking people to court out of their state and getting judgements against them because they didn't show. Get a lawyer,NOW. You need to be there or have a lawyer represent you.

Illegal use of soft ware That in my case is a joke..Wish I knew enough to do something illegal..Sort of wish I could get the lottery numbers before they were picked. Now that would be the only reason you could get me to New Haven or any other place in Conn.

There is malware/virus going around where they send you a court announcement. if you get one, DO NOT OPEN the attachment. It probably contains an infection payload.

Google: court appearance virus

Since you opened it, do a complete virus scan, malware scan and possibly a rootkit scan.

NEVER open any email or attachment from somebody you don't know. Courts never send appearance notices by email.
---------
Update: There are many virus removers on the Internet that claim they'll remove a specific infection. Beware -- many actually are trojans or viruses themselves. ONLY use Antivirus tools from known vendors - AVG, Avast, McAfee, Norton, etc. I'd never trust my info to anything else. I use AVG and, in the past, Kasperski.

I got one a few days ago with a zip attachment. I scanned the attachment it was a Trojan down loader.

Two points -

1) opening any attachment is dangerous. A court will most likely contact you by normal mail (or a summons). I am not aware of legal notices by email. May happen, but sounds like a scam.

2) Yes, companies prosecute for unlicensed use of software, at both the individual and corporate level.

Id send them an email and tell them to go **** themselves. Maybe telling them that would mean they were correct that you were guity of "illegal use of software?" :D

Oh and, just heard this in the news reported last night. Some Govt agancy just got $1 million dollars to use to check into som sort of internet posting abuse on twitter....:eek::rolleyes::mad:

Probably a scam. Next they'll probably tell you to send in fine money to avoid going to court.

Same thing just happened here recently and still going on is--a Trial or Jury Duty scam. One lady was unlucky enough to believe he scam and lost $1,200 in the process.

Yes yes yes. Also,I just got my first Jury Duty notice in about 14 years--just on Monday.

I've had 2 of these same emails in the last 5 days...delete, delete...

Should not have opened it up.

I figure if it's real then I'm going to jail. If it's a virus then my computer is toast. Either way I just press the delete button. Yeah sure I never know one way or the other... but ignorance can be bliss if done properly. ;)

Appropo of this I got a call yesterday from a division of Microsoft saying that my computer was putting out a lot of mistakes and junk to the net. I made a bad mistake. I told the lady that Microsoft would not be calling me about such things and she hung before I finished my sentence. Should have asked her what I could do about it, could she help me, etc. missed a real opportunity there. I got a news letter a couple months ago about such a scam.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot I use a Mac.

The call from "microsoft" is also a known scam. You'll see that the calling number is missing or too many / too few digits, as it is coming from the dark side of a criminal enterprise.

As to some valid internet notifications that were mentioned, such as advisories on people being put out on parole, you would have signed up for those. Add the email address to your contacts list, that way it won't be flagged as suspicious.

How hard would it be to call the New haven Courthouse and ask them if your name is on the docket?

You didn't say so in your original post, but was this via email? If so, it's a scam. If it was delivered by USPS and on paper, it might be legit, but still might be a scam.

Cases across state lines would probably be filed in federal court, not local courts.

If it's email, I'd delete it and move on.

Unless I'm mistaken a court document has to be sent with proof of delivery. So unless it registered mail or delivered by you friendly process server I would guess it is a fake.

I get the court documents emails all the time. I don't open anything that doesn't have my name on it.. A to whom concerned is a good indication of a Trojan. Now Im getting the your job application has been approved, you've been hired and others saying I got a job. Problem is I'm retired, don't want to work and haven't applied for a job.

Don't open any email that doesn't have your name on it.'

If in doubt call the court house where it says it's from but don't open any attachments. If you have better run a computer scan.

It's a scam and look carefully at the English used. The company that e-mailed me was called So-and-so Lawyers. I get one or two of those scams a month. If they want me they'll send something official in writing.
