This is a brand new M&P 9mm, purchased from my local dealer a couple weeks ago. Last Friday I ran 100 rds of factory ammo through it, no issues. During cleaning I noticed this small crack inside the mag well where the backstrap and takedown tool fit into the frame. Is this normal? Doesn't seem like it will hurt anything considering the location of the crack, but it is a bit concerning on a new gun. If you have an M&P can you take a look and see if yours looks like this? This is the best pic I could get of it.

I currently have 3 M&P's and none of them look like your photo. Unfortunately it does look like a crack. What is the date on your fired case envelope? The staining around the crack looks a little weird...like maybe somebody before you tried to glue it or something.
Might try E-mailing the photo to S&W Customer Service. I doubt if it will adversely effect your pistol, but new guns shouldn't have cracks.

I also have 3 and none look like that. One has over 50K rounds through it. I tried to take a picture but my phone wasn't up to the task and all the other cameras had dead batteries . It almost looks like an oversized pin was installed at one time. (not saying you did it, but it could have happened on the production line or at the dealer. The main reason I think that is because of the wear marks on the crack that show that area is raised above normal, none of mine are worn in that area.

Mike,

Checked two M&P .45 frames and nothing like that. In a new gun I'd first check with the dealer and see if they will make it good (don't know if you do a little or a lot of business with them). If not, I'd definitely contact S&W because that sort of damage is unacceptable. It may not run now, but who can say in 6-12 months of use.

Best of luck

Thanks for the replies. It's a new gun, hasn't been messed with at all. Bought it on 6/16, shot it for the first time on 6/27. It does appear to be slightly older stock as the fired case is dated 9/30/13. I sent an email w/ pic to S&W, just waiting to hear back. Pretty sure they will take care of it, but if not my dealer said he would do whatever was needed to get me squared away.

The discoloration is from the cartridge rim rubbing brass in that area when the magazine is inserted. It will certainly need to go to S&W, but I would be interested to know if the crack goes all the way through. If it does, it would be visible with the interchangeable back strap removed.

Looked at my m@p 40 fs and definitely don't have any cracks but there is a little bit of excess plastic around that area my guess is that's just from the mold used to make the frame but I think Smith will take care of the problem and if not your LGS sounds like a stand up guy willing to do whatever needs to be done to square you away good luck and be sure to post what comes of it

I just looked at my new 9mm FS, and that area looks fine. It has a test fire date of 9-18-13. I ran 200 rounds through it two weeks ago.

If you're in California move with alacrity. The 9mm drops off the roster in August and I don't believe you'll be able to get a replacement after expiration.

Just checked my m&p 40 fs....test date 11-6-2013.....no cracks in that area.

Mike: I have a 40 also. I would contact S&W for return and replacement. I would not continue to shoot it as is. It is only going to get worse not better. Good luck and let us know how you did with S&W customer service.

Heard from S&W. No info provided, just said I should send it in for inspection and asked for my info for the return label.

If your selling gun store would swap for a new one I would go that route first as with S&W you will be without a gun for a month or so. But I would not shot it that way. So send it back.

Here is photo of my almost-one-year old M&P40 FS.
I have only put a few hundred rounds through it.

Received the return shipping label today. Hoping to get it sent back on Monday.

Sent over the FFL on the 18th, haven't heard anything since. Kinda figured my replacement would be here by now, but no luck. Hopefully it will show up this week.
