I live in the town of Bel Air, in Harford County, Maryland, about 20 miles northeast of Baltimore. To the south and west of where I live is Baltimore County, which is immediately outside the City of Baltimore (which is not part of any county).
On Wednesday night, Baltimore County police responded to a call in the community of Cockeysville for a man having a mental health crisis...and when they arrived, the subject of the call opened fire on them and then escaped. One officer was slightly wounded, treated and released from a hospital.
Baltimore County Police locked down the entire area (which is partly suburban and partly rural) while they searched for the suspect all night Wednesday and all day Thursday. Schools were closed, people couldn't leave their homes or get to them, and things were a mess.
Last evening, while searching a wooded area near the suspect's home, Baltimore County Police encountered him. He shot and critically wounded a detective, then stole a police car, and led the police on a high speed chase east, over to my neck of the woods!
Harford County Emergency Operations notified citizens in my area to shelter in place, and as of this writing, law enforcement has the guy cornered in a wooded area about 4 miles south of me. Our Sheriff -- a tough, no-nonsense law-and-order guy -- has said this will end tonight right there...I hope and trust he's correct.
The Baltimore County detective the suspect shot tonight was Medevaced to the Shock-Trauma Center in downtown Baltimore. He was grievously wounded, but it appears he will survive.
Sadly, today, February 10th, is the seventh anniversary of the day two Deputy Sheriffs in my county were shot and killed in the line of duty...that this incident should unfold on such a solemn day is yet another grim reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers take for the sake of public safety.
