In Jan of this year I purchased a SW M&P FS 9mm for recreational use, and became a first-time gun owner. The weapon has functioned flawlessly with over 1k rounds through it, is accurate, shoots any ammo I feed it, and is fun as hell to shoot.

However...I am stuck in some kind of "Groundhog Day" customer service fail loop and I don't know whether to laugh or yell. When I bought the pistol it came with two mags, one of which was a .40 cal. Not a big deal, easy to fix right? I sent SW an email asking for guidance on the best way to swap out the .40 mag for a California compliant full size 10 round mag. A few days later I got a nice reply with mailing instructions, etc. .40 cal mag goes in a padded envelope and off to SW. About ten days later I get a package from SW with a CA compliant 10 round 9mm mag in it...only once I get it to the range I discover it must be for a M&P compact because it is too short to properly feed/load the ammo. Grrrrrrr, but not the end of the world.

So I call SW and explain my situation. The people I speak with are all very nice; "So sorry sir, we are sending out another mag today. Yes it is full size 10 round, I am looking at it now. Please return the short mag." OK, will do - all good.

So yesterday I get home from a business trip and there is a package from SW. Yes, yes, yes, my new full-sized 10 round mag must be here! Maybe I can go shooting with a buddy this weekend woot! Whoa there big fella...not so fast. SW has, for the third time now, provided me with the wrong mag. Thats right, they sent me *another* short 10 round 9mm mag. Arrrrrrgh!!! Of the four magazines I have gotten through SW (2 original purchase & 2 replacement) 3 of them are have been the wrong size, wrong caliber or both. It was a true facepalm moment. I don't know whether to laugh or yell.

I understand how good honest hard-working folks can make mistakes, but three fails on the same issue...really? And I can't help but wonder if that is how they roll what other issues will I encounter with my pistol.

Maybe you are not properly conveying that it is for a full sized pistol and not the compact?

Post a pic of both mags. I don't see how they can mix up a fs mag with a compact, but stranger things have happened.

The compact mag is not just a little, but way shorter than fs.

Wish it was that simple. I was very specific in all of my communication with SW (its the best way to deal with any repair/replacement). Heck in the letter which accompanied my last return I wrote "Please send me a FULL SIZE 10 round 9mm mag". As far as pics go, my gun is stored in a proper gun safe at a buddy's house. But the new replacement mag is an exact match to the first replacement.

I just called SW and after being on hold for a while the system dropped my call. Try try again...maybe the fourth time is the charm.

What is the length of the new mag and what does the base plate look like?

Can you swap the baseplate from one of your other mags to the new one and make it work?

I guess I'm trying to get my head around how you got to the range before you noticed the mag was too short. There is like an inch difference in the baseplate.

Pictures would help.

I'd send them a picture of the gun when you return the magazine and specifically put "This is the gun I need a 10 round 9mm magazine for. This is a full size 4.25" barreled M&P 9mm. Serial #..."

Sometimes it's okay to go overboard, especially when they've screwed it up multiple times.

And go overboard with saying a full sized CA compliant. Are you in SoCal? I'll trade a CA compliant .40 mag for your full sized .40 one.

I'm a bit confused too why you could not tell the difference right away without taking it to the range. Like said, there is a significant difference in size between the full and compact mags. Putting your FS 9 and compact mags side by side would show an obvious difference. If yours are similar in size, then maybe you got the right one and there is another issue with it?

I'm just hung up on this "40mm" magazine! Must be huge!

That's funny I was just talking to a local police officer that was telling me they switched to 40mm from the 9 because it had better stopping power. I told him "I bet it does" :)

Common error. No great harm.

Sorry you're having such an issue... my suggestion is to get on the S&W website and get part numbers before you call them again. My pistol is an XXXXXX, and the mag you sent me is a YYYYYY, and what you need to send me is a ZZZZZZ. Sometimes you have to put the dots close together to help connect them. They should know all this, but have demonstrated that they don't. Help them help you :)

Hope you get it resolved soon.

The M203 fires a 40mm shell....

They do make mags for them:

Or did you mean the .40 mag?

I have never had a problem with Smith & Wesson Customer Service. I can't explain why your situation was not resolved.

LOL. Opps, noob mistake...I meant .40...

But if my wrist could take the recoil it would be nice to test out the M&P as an anti-aircraft platform. ;^)

Next time you call, have the correct part number in hand and ASK FOR THE SERVICE MANAGER. Nicely explain it to him/her and see what happens.

When were the mags introduced? I remember carrying a bag of shells around but no mags. (but that was 43 years ago:o)

They are not really mags, more like big PEZ dispensers. I remember reading about the USMC testing them a few years back.

Never implemented in the Grunt units. We just use the cans.
