I created this new thread so as to not hijack another. The letter associated with my particular Registered Magnum was posted to assist another member with regards to the originality of the rear sight on his Registered Magnum. The astute readership of this forum proved that they so indeed read factory letters, as posted to this forum, with a fine tooth comb---and take nothing for granted.

This Registered Magnum was purchased at auction a scant five weeks ago and already was presented on this forum; thus, it is not fresh subject matter for the forum.

The letter states the following: "A special pair of magna grips was included fit to the revolver to allow for butt swivel." This firearm was shipped also with the checkered walnut stocks currently on it. I have asked Roy on the private side, as this makes no sense and at the suggestion of others, if Roy meant to say this allows for grip adapter (thank you Muley Gil).

I was also asked if this revolver came with the magna grips and the grip adapter. No, the revolver was purchased as depicted in the photographs.

I will update this thread as I find out more.

SWHF information is forthcoming.

One of the things they wanted to see was the backside of the Magna grips if you could post pics of those. I know the grip adapter is not there, but are you saying the pre-war Magnas that are on it are not the originals?

The documents on the way to you will show this, but your Magnum was shipped with regular stocks and grip adapter attached. It was also shipped with an extra pair (per the original order) of Magna stocks "to fit this arm". Magna stocks and service stocks were fitted to the frame of each revolver so, while the wording on the invoice may be a little unusual, the Magna stocks were simply fitted per normal procedure. The Magna stocks have nothing to do with the butt swivel or the grip adapter. I assume they are numbered to your Magnum.

Probably the most unusual thing about your Magnum is it was sighted in at 100 yards with .38 Specal wadcutter ammo.

I can post a photo of the invoice if you would if think it would help.

Sure! Please do!

Bad English. I was referencing the lack of grip adapters.

Here is a photograph of the back side of the grips.

The invoice should answer your questions.

Thank you Bill!

I wonder why it was so important to have a swivel in butt? All capital letters and underlined: "TO HAVE SWIVEL IN BUTT".

The documents you will receive show the Magnum was ordered with a butt swivel and extra pair of stocks, but there is no mention as to why. That question will most likely never be answered.

Roy has posted over on the other side and he states, as summarized, the letter IS correct as transcribed, more or less, from original invoices.

....

The letter states the following: "A special pair of magna grips was included fit to the revolver to allow for butt swivel." .

I think that based on the document which Bill posted, the wording of the letter simply created a connection between the swivel and the extra stocks where clearly none exists. Having the swivel remark printed right below the stock listing is likely responsible for that false impression. End of mystery ;)

Perhaps if the Historical Foundation has the original order form from the customer it will show exactly how the butt swivel order was listed - might shed some light on the way it is listed on the invoice since the butt swivel is a special order item and not pre-listed on the order form.

Now the question might be, should the extra Magna grips have the serial number on them, since the factory did fit them to that frame?

The swivel was likely for a lanyard. I presume that the purchaser foresaw a use in which that would be valuable.
