Shuffle board with granite stones,just an fyi the stones cost about 600.00 each and each team has 9 stones
Lived in Switzerland for a long time, where it's popular.
It's an ice variant of the French "Boules", the Italian "Bocce Ball", etc. (or shuffleboard?). Brooming the ice is done to influence the direction of the stones.
In Switzerland, Italy, France and Germany, people play it on lakes in the winter. Different looking stones, though.

Dammit, no spoilers!! The wife and I got fished into watching USA vs Italy last night. I have no idea what's going on, but it reminded me of shuffleboard or carroms in ice
Flipped to NBC for a while today and there was a curling match. Still not sure I understand it but I was drawn in, fascinated by it and enjoying it.

My people came to Louisiana in 1728 ...
We never played the game ... looks more like "sliding" tham curling to me ... Looks Cold Too !
Last year I saw 8 inches of snow fall in Baton Rouge , the most snow I have seen in 76 years ... Too dang cold to go outside and play slide on de ice games ... I stay inside untill the big melt !

My wife and I tried it last year at a Curling Club. It was an introduction class. We had fun, not easy at all. The club is about an hour away if it was closer we would do it more.

I wasn't that good at it. But if beer drinking was included I would have medaled.
I think the most entertaining curling story out there is the history of the Russian Women’s Olympic Curling program.
They had no national experience in this game so they started recently from ground zero. They also knew that they would be bidding and likely hosting the Winter Olympics And if you know how this nation works, the Government has fantastic resources and ability to approach this task however they choose.
So they did not find a slew of female athletes and teach them curling. Instead, they started by opening applications for models from one end of their massive country to the other, and when they had many hundreds of stunningly attractive women, only then did they begin the task of trying to find out which of them took well to training to become competitive at the game.
Net result was a program stuffed to the gills with gorgeous women, and they were the stars of the Sochi games held in Russia. They sold calendars and posters of these ladies and marketed them more like models than athletes.

I will admit that I don't follow Curling when the Winter Olympics aren't on, but when they are I'm quite taken with it!

The stones are made from very special granite sourced from two places in the world. An island off of Scotland and a quarry in Wales.

Watched some women's already. They ain't slack one bit.
Women are well-suited for curling as they are naturally disposed to sweeping with brooms.

Some years back I was flipping channels and ran across a curling match where the commentators were explaining the game and discussing the origins. per them, it originated in Scotland. From some of the comments above, it seems to have a following in other countries as well. That aside, the quote above-if whisky is substituted- may be closer than you might think if you consider some of the other Scots based sports. Like golf and the highland games where one throws trees (the caber), stones and other objects that were designed for other purposes. I'm not real sure who gets credit for some unusual races, but again, strong drink is likely involved.Looks like an Olympic sport that SHOULD also include beer drinking.

Re the Scots and golf’s origins, Robin Williams has a hilarious skit, available on YouTube, in which he imagines how the Scots invented the game. Pretty profane, so I won’t post a link, but very funny.

Curling is right up there with watching golf and bowling on TV. If I am that desperate to kill time I will take a nap
