I am looking to buy a used, California-located model 642 with a 3" barrel. It is marked .38 special and does not show a "+P." The serial no. begins BMV866. It is has no lock above the cylinder latch, which is the previous semi-rectangular shape. The gun has black rubber boot grips and comes with the factory cardboard box. Looks to be in very good condition. I would be very grateful for some advice on the value of this gun. Thank you very much for your assistance.

I see 642 no dash guns with 2" barrels bringing $350-$500 easily in this part of the country. I would pay a premium for one with the 3" barrel as they are not commonly found. As with everything in California I would guess price is likely higher. Is there a price on this revolver now?

Nathan's gun? His starts with a BFV prefix unless I didn't see it right. It was only made between 1990 and 1992. And the BFV prefix puts it right in there, before it was discontinued in 92'. The 3" was only made those years.

Book value is 550 ANIB. But the 3" is rarely seen.

His price in today's market doesn't seem to be out of place.

My BKE prefix early 642 went back to S&W in October for a cracked frame. Awaiting delivery of a replacement 442 No lock (my preference). I've never seen a three inch.

I stumbled across mine about 5 years or so ago and paid $500 for her.

It is a rarity but the 3 inch barrel limits the practicality for the 642s purpose as a pocket gun.

Shown here with a 3 inch 640, 60-4 and 36LS
