Hi, all!

Just thought I'd include a pic of my beloved 645 S&W .45. I got it used for almost nothing from a guy who claimed it had belonged to a Navy SEAL at one time (he didn't charge me extra for the story, so I didn't mind believing it). I sent it to Rick Devoid of Tarnhelm industries and he did a carry melt for me, installed a bobbed hammer, and polished the trigger for me. What I got back was such a beautifully smooth and accurate pistol that when I got a hankering to get one of my guns engraved it was the one that got sent off to Michael Gouse of Montana, who did 100% coverage in American Scroll for me. I keep thinking of getting ivory grip panels made up for her, too!

No, she's not a safe queen; I still take her out and shoot her on a regular basis!

You outta have at least some wood panels on that piece, understand ivory can be fragile when cut thin for pistol stocks.

There was a guy I talked to about it awhile back who told me that even as thin as they would need to be for this gun that ivory is hardly fragile seeing as how elephants use it for ripping up treestumps and the like. He assured me that he could build a very nice set of handles for me; I just didn't have the money at the time.

Yeah; that's the one thing about the 2nd Gen. S&W autos that always drove me nuts; the stupid screw holding the off-side safety lever in place.

Oh, well; this gun would be TOO pretty if it didn't have at least one flaw...

It is a very nice gun.

You could always replace the safety with a 3rd gen one.

That sir, is a fine looking firearm. I would agree with you on the ivory. Slightly aged ivory with perhaps some scrimshaw with some personal significance? That would be the crowning touch to a beautiful pistol.

Absolutely! I have had ideas for scrimshaw, mostly involving the family crests; but I'm afraid I simply don't know what kind of artists are available these days for that kind of work. I've found grip makers who work in ivory, but I've not been as lucky in finding people who do scrimshaw.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I didn't even know that was a possibility! I wish I had known when I first had the pistol customized; at this point, of course, I probably won't do it. It's hard to see in the pic I posted (too much glare) but Michael Gouse actually put a little bit of engraving on the safety levers as well.

There was a thread about that some tim ago, but I can't remember if it was in the middle of a 4506 or 645 thread.
