Got one that I've thought of sending off the Gemini or Cylinder and Slide for customizing. Thinking of a 3" barrel, dovetailed front sight, bead blast, etc. Something differant. To be honest, I've never been impressed with the gun in the first place. Just want something that I'll like alot better.

Why did you buy it in the first place? If you don't like it, sell it. I am sure you will have plenty of takers.

Bought it to help out someone that ordered two, then changed his mind.

Guy I shoot with had a 8" 617 10 shot, worked on.
Barrel milled some ,, full length under lug milled mostly off ,, not sure what else he had done. Had a similar balance to my stock 4" but with a wicked long sight radius. Shot like a dream.
I'm not much into long barrel handguns but, this one was Sweet.

Sell it and buy somthing you really want. Don't butcher up a nice piece and lose money in the process.

Sell it to someone who does appreciate a damn fine revolver. Second hand prices for a 617 down here are more than a 686

"Appreciate" is a common word amongst collectors. "Shooters" may use the term with a different meaning.
It is your gun until you sell it or die. To me pride of ownership means that the gun is MINE--and---I like to make them mine specifically.
Do something to it if you want--It is not like you are "apostacizing" from the faith by doing so. I know of guys who will pay good money fro "old" guns doctered up by well known Smiths. I am not of the school that you will necessarily lose value when you make it yours.
Blessings

Customized K22's can be really cool if done right,
I personally like the whole idea of a 22 lr copy of .357s that S&W never made ,
Member Nedroe made a .22 caliber copy of a 2.5" Model 19 with a model 17 donor gun and a 2.5" Model 19 short barrel ,
He converted the SB to round butt and made a 22 caliber barrel insert.
Came out real nice and its a gun S&W never made.

I have debated removing half the underlug of a 4" SB 617 to make a 4" Model 66 look alike or
using a RB 617 donor and cut the barrel back to 3" to make a 686 snub look alike.

Plenty of projects just need the time and imagination .

I wouldn't hesitate to modify a 617-6 but I'd leave the earlier dash guns alone.
