Customizing a Model 28

If the barrel is a 6" and in decent shape it would be more economical and match up better to cut it down. Cut the ramp and sight from the cutoff portion, mill and silver solder back on.

I do not know much about customizing guns but i have looked at pictures of square butt guns that have been modified to round butt and on two occasions part of the serial number was ground off to get the right shape.
Not saying it would happen in your case but I would be careful and plan before the grinder comes out.

I just picked up a mechanically good 28-2 that has a bunch of rust freckles. It is going to get a 45 barrel and a 44 mag cylinder reamed to 45 Colt. Haven't figured out how long I will leave the 6 1/2" barrel yet. It will cost me way less than a model 25 and I won't have to worry about oversize throats. I can sell off the barrel which is rust spot free and the 28 cylinder will end up being a 45ACP with correct throats for another one of my projects.

Worn 28-2s aren't collectible. (I do have a beauty 28-2 with TT TH) Make them what you want. Shoot em forever.

Heres one i ended up with. Little longer barrel but a full 28-2 custom. 45acp/45lc cylinders

Pete,

Is that a re-bore on the barrel? I don't see how else you'd get a tapered one, unless you found a Model 26 barrel somewhere.

Who did the work? I'd love to have a taped .45 ACP N-frame.

Long story, but Bubba round butted this one using his bench grinder.
I cleaned it up, finished the job.
Then got an unfinished set of Kurac Combats (thanks Jennifer!), fitted and finished them.
Sort of a silk purse from a sows ear job.
Would be nicer as a 3", but not going there!

Jtcarm.

It is a 26 barrel that someone shortend to a 5". I bought it all this way. They even went and restamped it to look like a 26. But it left s&w factory as a 28-2. Seems to get alot of interest from people. I own several s&w and it is probably one of the most accurate wheel guns i own. I was told the engraving was done by a guy in lubbock tx.

cprher,

I think it's a good idea. Have you thought about a brushed Hard Chrome finish? Looks very handsome.

Question for you if you please: Have you thought about the top straps? The 28s have the smooth top straps and the 27s have the checkered. A decent idea would be to heavily stipple everything to make it match.

Don't worry about degrading the value of whatever gun. The gun is yours and if you're not using it to its full potential, have it done the way YOU want it.

Sounds like a great project. I'm doing one also, whereby I sent in my 1987-vintage Model 27-3 6-inch to S&W to hopefully have them mount a 60's vintage near mint 3-1/2 inch barrel onto the newer frame to make a faux FBI gun. Here in Kalifornia, if it's not on the list, you can't get it unless it's a private party in-state transfer.

Keep us abreast of your project. I like the smell of it...

Very cool. I wonder when it was done. Model 26 barrels can't be easy to come by.
