I have a 1954 Highway Patrolman. The cylinder does not move freely on the crane. I have disassembled the cylinder from the crane and cleaned and lubed all parts. It will move about 300 degrees then will stick a little. When I first got the gun the cylinder would turn only by physically turning it. You could not use DA and SA was hard.

Would polishing the rod assembly help and if so what would be best way to accomplish?

Open the cylinder and see if it spins freely on the YOKE. (Colts have cranes, not S&W). If it spins freely then watch the end of the extractor rod as you spin it, it should not wobble a significant amount. If it does then the extractor rod is bent and will cause the problem you describe.

If the cylinder does not spin freely when swung out then take it apart and clean it better.

Did you recently clean it? I have had a single bristle from a bore brush get in between the yoke and the cylinder and make the cylinder hard to rotate.

If it were mine, as ALK8944 suggested, I'd unscrew the extractor rod, while taking the proper precautions, disassemble the extractor from the cylinder, and clean the inside of the cylinder with a mop and blow dry with canned air. A little bit of crud in the wrong place can really gum up the whole thing.
