So my local gun Smith from whom I bought my sd40ve has put this fear of firing walmart ammo through my pistol based on him telling me that they have had to send several pistols back to the manufacturer with bulged- deformed barrels. IV never had that problem with ANY pistol iv fired before but being this weapon is for defensive carrying I don't want to make a mistake when it really counts.
Has any one ever run into this problem with either an sd model or any other autoloader? Or has this occurred with any brands besides walmart ammo?

Honestly I think your guy there could fail a drug test! Walmart is not going to sell defective ammo as the liability is too great! I really believe he just wants to sell you ammo at a much higher price thus increasing his profits. No, I'm not a Wally fan, but really? Kyle

No such thing as Walmart ammo. They sell the same stuff everyone else does. I'd never do business with this LGS ever again.

In fact, do us all a favor and post his location/contact information.

The most common cause of bulged barrels are firing a round through an obstructed barrel. Or, firing a squib round and getting the bullet stuck and firing a full power round after it.

The only time I have had ammo problems such as you describe is with Russian Silver Bear Makarov 120 gr. HP. It was a squib in a factory box and I failed to notice it. The 120 gr. had OAL issues as well that were eventually addressed by the manufacturer by reducing bullet size to 94 gr.

Just as everyone else said, there isn't any Walmart Brand ammo.
They sell same stuff as Academy, Cabelas, Bass Pro, etc.

I have to ask, how much did this "gun smith" charge you for your SD40VE?

Makes no sense. Walmart sells many big name brands of ammo. I think he was implying that if you bought the ammo from him, that wouldn't happen. Even tho the ammo is identical, his costs more, therefore, higher quality. :D

I suppose that factory ammunition could be loaded incorrectly, but it is quite rare. I think your chances are better at winning the lottery or getting hit by lightning, than finding improperly-loaded factory ammo.

A lot of times something bad happens and the ammo is automatically blamed. Most of those times the firearm is the root cause of the failure. Out of battery ignition and partially unsupported case heads are often to blame.

I think that your "gunsmith" sounds like a tool. ;)

I remember a few years ago when the rumor was that the Weatherby Vanguards sold by Walmart were cheap junk and not the same as the ones sold elsewhere. Lots of rumors, wives tales and misconceptions in the firearms area.

In fact, I've found Walmart (and I'm not a big fan for other reasons) to be a great place to buy ammo.

Walmart does not make or reload ammo.

To me there are 3 grades of ammo.
- Factory new
- Factory reload
- Individual reload (includes for yourself or others)

I'm sure it is possible for any to make a mistake. It does happen.

The most likely area for possible problems would be factory reloads. The cases are used, resized and reloaded.

But I would also not worry about factory reloads too much.

This case sounds like your LG Smith is trying to get more business from you (if he sells ammo too) or trying to shift a responsibility from himself to some other possible issue.

walmart 100 ct WWB .40 S&W $37.97
LGS WWB .40 S&W $49.99

misleading the customer to increase profit margins is bad business. id never go back there and find a new LGS to deal with. at least mine said yes my prices are a few dollars higher. but i also have to make a few bucks off the ammo. being honest works best. i buy factory ammo from him because it helps his business. typically i get reloads off a friend but sometimes when you get a brand new firearm you want to shoot factory ammo through it.

Like everyone else said. NO SUCH THING AS WALMART AMMO!! They sell ammo like every other gun store. There is no ammo made by them or for them and no one is certainly going to sell known factory defects out of Walmart for a cheaper price. This isn't a faded t shirt or a scuffed refrigerator that sell for less. This is an explosive that can maim or kill the user. No manufacturer or retailer is going to take that chance.

Now it is possible that there was a bad batch or a bad round in the box but that box could have went to any store and it can happen to any manufacturer.

My advice is forget that guy. chances are he's going to give you a lot of bad and outdated advice. Some of the worst advice I ever herd of came from gunsmiths

Stretching a Point

At the risk of thread drift, I recall asking an hourly employee for a local and popular gunshop for a box of .300 Savage ammo. He produced a box of 300 Win. Mag. and assured me that there was no such thing as .300 Savage. Maybe I shudda tried Walmart but then I'd risk bulging the barrel of my vintage Savage Model 99. It seems, you just can't win.

I hope those grades don't mean that you think reloads are bottom-of-the-barrel. Most competitive match shooters reload their own ammunition, because factory ammo isn't nearly as good as reloads. Not even factory "match" ammo can come as close to the accuracy that I can get by measuring every single charge and getting it down to the gnat's eyebrow. :)
