We got pretty far off topic on a previous thread https://smith-wessonforum.com/threads/3914dao-from-wisconsintransfers-came-in.747357/ so I will offer this option for further discussion.

List of 3rd Gen DAO variants I have seen or have accumulated some info regarding (I have excluded the 3944, 3946 which do not appear anywhere except in parts lists). The bold, colored are Double Strike Capable.

To best of my knowledge the 457D is the only variant that exists in 2 configurations, WITH and WITHOUT Double Strike Capability.

It may be worth noting the earliest of the Double Strike Capable pistols appears to the the 3983 (essentially a 3913DAO) (Jan 1997) or the 457D (1997) followed shortly by the 3914DAO which might explain why the 3914DAO is so named to distinguish from the previous 3954.

The Chiefs Special DAOs with Double Strike capability seem to date from 2000 and later. I have only observed first hand 2 of the Chief Specials - both CS9D and both are Double Strike Capable. My 457D is NOT.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the xx4x or xx5x pistols have Double Strike Capability, though one seller claimed to have a late 3953TSW UCV5897 Prod Code 404541 Spec Ord 3197 (2013) which was Double Strike Capable (my 3953TSW BJM180x and another UCU4109 both Prod Code 404541 are NOT).

I had and foolishly sold a pre rail 3953TSW. Wish I could get it back.
Have a 3953TSW with rail, 3953, 6946, 5946 (couldn't resist it for the price), and of course the 3914DAO.
I converted one of my 457s to DAO, converted it back, and sold it. Still have the parts so if I can find another 457 cheap enough, I might do it again. Of course I'd like a genuine CPD one, but have only ever seen one for sale.

At the moment I have two each of the 4546 and 4556, along with one 4586. I have spare slides with Tritium sights for each pistol.

Boy, I sure wish I still owned this one. As long as I owned it, I never found out what "N.P.D." stood for.
Oh well, great pistol nevertheless.

NPD is Newark PD

I swear, MOST (but not all) of the 6946's I've seen are NPD marked. There was a time they were on GB 20-30 at a time.

They're still not too hard to find, and IMO these and the 5946's are the sleepers of the third gen DAO family. Those are the ones you can find and often times a little cheaper than the 6906 or 5906 for sale next to it. People that don't know, turn their nose up at them, and people that do know are shopping for the 3914DAO's and CS9D's.

You should get another one!
