am buying a model 36 today. number on butt frame is 2J8073. can someone help me put a date on it. thanks in advance

Do you mean J28073?

That would be 1969-1970.

It is one of the five number and "floating" J SN guns, likely from 1971.

I knew that; must have been a senior moment. Sorry for the confusion. My own Chief is a floating J from 1974.

S&W customer service told me mine was a 1972 but Mr. Jinks said not so fast. Just love how they shipped guns.
