Have a 1006 serial number TAV50xx.
Your 1006 has a TAV prefix?
That's generally a 2nd gen pistol prefix (1987) and the 1006 didn't come out until 1990.
But, they didn't use them in order or to completion....

Was wondering where to find serial number dates myself. Possibly here or on S&W's website?
We can give you an estimated date.
The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has a section with estimated dates by serial number.
A call to S&W CS can get you a close date for ones made after 1986.
Then, a history letter will get you the actual date it left S&W.

If you still have the box and accessories, the little pouch that the test fired cartridge comes in has the test date written on it. Might not be that actual shipping date but I would bet it would be pretty close.

I was thinking the same thing. I have a fairly brand new model and the fired case envelope says 06/13. Just wasn't exactly sure how long after production that they pull a test fire.

Went back to double check the serial number. It is TEV50XX, not TAV. Sorry about that. Any idea of this number?
