Date of my Highway Patrolman

I have a highway patrolman serial N2583##

My blue book I think suggested the years 1976 or 1977. But I never could nail down an exact year. Would anybody have any idea what exact year?

That would be correct. According to Roy G. Jinks, "History of Smith & Wesson".

The books just give you an estimated time, it'll cost you $50 to get the exact time.

The problem is that the factory did not ship guns out in sequential manner. That one may have shipped out as soon as it was completed or it may have languished in the vault for months or even years before being shipped. Only a letter can nail down the exact ship date.
