David Odgen Stiers (Charles Emerson Winchester on M.A.S.H.), dead at 75.

I'm not sure, but didn't he play the dad in "Better Off Dead", a funny/stupid teen movie from the 80's? The movie in which the paperboy on the bike kept harassing Laine Myers for $2 as a sub-plot. (Where's my 2 dollars/)! The dad thought his son was on drugs and was using some parenting booklet on how to tell if your kid's on drugs. Almost possitive it was Stiers.
Yes that was him... first time I ever witnessed boiled bacon... he was great in that movie...

One of the most memorable episodes of the entire show, in my opinion, is an episode with a stuttering soldier who came through the MASH. Winchester was uncharacteristically caring toward him.

The reason behind his compassion was discovered at the very end of the episode when Winchester listens to a recording from his sister.

I remember when he sent a box of chocolates to the orphans who sold it for rice...when he found out he realized how pampered he was and came to understand the plight of the children. Also, when a pianist lost use of his arm, he encouraged him to play with one, providing recordings to show him it could be done. He grew into the role and came out a better man for it. Good acting.

I just ran across this just a few minutes ago, right here. He died of bladder cancer. I rather enjoyed his character's portrayal on the series. All of them that were on M.A.S.H. are getting up in age, so I wouldn't be surprised to see more of them going on in the next few years.

I had not heard. I really enjoyed him as well. He also conducted an orchestra in recent history and rather good at his craft. Rest in Peace David.:o:o

Watched the show when young since I didn't know better.
It ought to be called the Alan Alda Show, can't stand it.

I liked his character on MASH. You knew that deep down, he was compassionate. His pomposity was a defense to maintain a sense of normalcy during the chaos of war.
