dB levels like a Jet Engine

Well....now I truly know how folks feel about me at the range. I never realized how unfriendly magnums are to folks or their feeling towards magnum shooters.

I always wear plugs and muffs and don't understand why everyone doesn't.

My indoor range is very close to home and open 10-12hrs each day. The nearest outdoor range is over an hour away and has very restrictive midday only hours and not even open all week.

I usually start out my range sessions with the lighter stuff and work my way up to magnum revolvers. I really enjoy shooting all of them, especially the magnums.

I was not aware that my fellow shooters were such a sensative lot.

Perhaps they should have a "pansy hour" for he magnum haters.

Maybe this Tsunami shooter's gun was ported.

We do, at least I always do. They won't stop muzzle waves in the 165 - 170 dBA range from damaging ears. And for the record, the shooter is standing directly behind the muzzle and gets spared the direct blast wave and gets mostly reflected sound.

I was not aware that my fellow shooters were such a sensitive lot.
Whatever, maybe they just don't want to spend the last 30 years of their lives yelling "What?" at everybody...

Sure.

Would not matter, in fact porting might make it a little less since a port taps off some of the gasses and sends them upwards at the ceiling. The main noise comes off the muzzle.

Check out the db reduction ratings on hearing protection; those cheapo disposable foam plugs have some of the highest ratings available. No need to spend a lot of money.
Be VERY careful, that assumption is wrong and reflects the inadequacies of the rating system. The NRR ratings reflect stopping sound across a wide frequency range and reflect the "average" effectiveness. Problem is, very loud noises don't have to go into the ear canal where the plugs are, they can simply go in through bone conduction. Your head is full of bone and plugs do nothing to stop that. Muffs are better but still pretty weak. Plugs in the ear canals work great in the higher frequencies, and do about nothing in the low frequencies. So plugs will certainly help, but are inferior to muffs. And plugs and muffs can not stop very loud sounds especially lower frequencies.

That's what I have...the cicadas. It's constant...always there. It's just that it's worse (or more noticeable) at certain times. Like right now, for example.
I used to have the steady buzzing in my ears.... now I long for those good old days. The current tinnitus I have is a steady whine in my right ear, but my left ear has a constantly changing "raspy buzz" that sounds like a bug is flying in and out of my ear. It can not be drowned out, if I try to the buzz "rides" on top of the surrounding noise always louder than any other sound.

Tinnitus is nothing you want, it can be so bad some people have killed themselves. You don't want to have something that will drive you nuts every second of every day.

Wanting to keep your last vestiges of hearing is being a pansy? Well, I reckon I've been called worse but, I prefer to keep at least one good ear. Being macho ain't my bag anymore. I like shooting magnums too-had a few 44's and several 357's over the years but, they were all shot outside and I didn't know what they were like indoors until recently.

I feel your pain, my good man. Lived with it since '72 and I thought I'd go nuts for awhile even yelling out loud to override it to get some temporary relief-all to no avail until I forced myself to attempt to tune it out. Of course you can't and the worse time for me was at bed time. I can't adequately describe the noise. It's a constant, don't vary in pitch, high frequency sound that you won't muffle and it makes female voices(for me) especially hard to year when in a restaurant or they ask you something with your back to them.

I still may get this 3 inch 686+. It's a beautiful weapon with those wooden Talon grips. One of the main reasons for getting it was because there's no worry about any spring compression over time, no jams of any sort so likened to an auto at times, and the fact you get seven shots of the best man stopper fodder available. A nice bedside companion in the event of things going awry in your household but the possibility at a high price.

I had a 12 gauge go off in the house years ago(Mossberg 500) and of course, I had no muffs on. I don't recall it being as bad as what that guy was shooting the other day when I did have ear protection. There was a defective part in that shotgun was reason for it going off initially. I was young then ...about 27 or so and thought I'd load a few rounds to see how the action was and if it would eject. When I racked a round in the chamber it went off. Luckily, I had it pointed down and toward my bookcase. I killed seven books that day and the bottom of my bookcase.

"Space shuttle launch with Solid Rocket Boosters = 165 db. It's so loud that millions of gallons of water are dumped into the launch pad exhaust tunnels to absorb noise as the noise will destroy the orbiter on the pad!" Friends and neighbors, that is loud. That quote was from another forum where this subject was apparently a topic of discussion and concern so, we're not alone.

I'm a big fan of .357 and I love to shoot it. When I do, I wear lots of ear protection and I generally shoot at my indoor range at times when there aren't a lot of other shooters around. However, the noise generated by the round usually attracts a couple of onlookers who wonder what's being fired. The other day, I was shooting 158 gr. magnums (a lot less noisy than the 125s, IMO) and they were making their usual impressive boom. A couple of folks came over to see what was going on and I had a little fun showing them the gun and explaining to them what I was shooting. Then, as I was talking we heard this enormous BOOM!!!! three lanes over. We all stopped and walked over to see what had generated that noise. It was someone with a 460. Now, THAT's loud.

Wait, so I'm an (expletive, redacted) for shooting 357 and 44 in the indoor ranges I frequent?

Yup, I knew that already. One of the reasons I do it is that I know it's allowed and it pisses off the haters. :) I'm an a-hole guilty as charged and don't care. lol

If you know we exist, brace yourselves, we will drop in on you sooner or later. :)

I prefer the muffs but I don't mind the plugs. I've never had an occasion to need to double up thus far. The day I shoot a .50 BMG is the day you'll see me double up. Snipers warned me about that bad boy and I'll take their word for it. That's a lot of power.

Yup that's what I do. I like to end it with a series of big bangs. Most people get a kick out of it though from my experience.

I was not aware that my fellow shooters were such a sensative lot.

Oh just say Glocks suck or M9s are crap and you'll see how sensitive they can get. And before anybody chews me out I have plans to buy a G26 so don't shake my tree. :) lol

Yeah I hear you. Leave the pansys room so they can complain in peace. :)

Yup and I'm labeled right there with you. The older I get the less I care about what people think. God bless America. :)

lol Loud as hell isn't it? Get some rounds and borrow it for a spin, it's a hell of a wild ride. I love mine. :)

Watch out for the Magtech and Hornady rounds though, those are the two wildest manufactered ones I know of, right around 2200 to 2100 feet per second. Ahh it's sweet to pull the trigger on those. :)

Aha-now your identity is blown.:) Like loud noises? Maybe a fire fight with incoming mortar rounds pounding the earth beneath you in Phu Loi would have given you all that you wanted so you could come home with both ears blown out and getting free hearing aids and batteries for the rest of your life... sound like fun?:) Sorry you missed that, it was a real blast.:)

Try standing next to a guy shooting .30 carbine out of a 4 5/8" barrel Blackhawk at the indoor range. Man, I just had to leave. Felt like someone was shoving a knitting needle through my ear.
