Dealing with a CC from a LEO view

Good stuff, for sure. I was particularly interested in the section on common behaviors of gun carriers. For bad guys, CCW's and Cops it seems that a common habit is "swivel head", or constant checking for threats. Heightened awareness. Also the remark that only highly trained personnel can overcome these tells.

Has me wondering how do I stay alert without giving that appearance?

I would guess that the average concealed carrier knows the laws concerning cc at least as well as the average street/traffic officer.

I have dealt with LE several times while CC and never once had a problem.
If they ask, I tell them I am armed (useally even a minor traffic stop this asked)
If they dont ask, then they dont need to know since I am no threat to them.
Only once or twice have I ever been treated with disrespect, and I think this was a case of a LEO with a bad attitude towards anyone who wasnt wearing a badge.

My wife was stopped once for a minor infraction and as a courtesy to the Officer she volunteered the information that she had a CCW and was carrying. In Arizona it isn't required that you tell an Officer you are carrying unless specifically asked. He went from being a semi-nice guy to accusing her of putting him in danger by carrying a gun. He retrieved her M&P from her purse, cleared the chamber and emptied the magazine and took everything to his car where he ran her information and the serial number on her gun. When he returned the cartridges were in a small plastic bag. He had her open the trunk and placed everything in the trunk and told her not to open it until she got home. He treated her like she was some sort of criminal and her attitude towards cops took a serious downturn as a result.

it made me think that cops think only well dressed consertives cc lawfully

I agree it was a good article. Most cops in pro gun states support CCW and don't hassle legally armed citizens. There will always be few that either don't support it or think they are superior. But thankfully they are few and far between.

I avoid the whole problem with CC by open carrying most of the time. That way the police don't have to wonder if the lump under my shirt is a gun or not.

While I'd like to say one bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch, in this case it really can. In sales you are taught that it takes at 10 great interactions to undo 1 bad one, it's the same or more with LEOs. It's a hard job that does not always attract the best. It's a game of numbers, there are a lot of great LEOs but all it takes is one bad one to turn alot of good people around the wrong way.

I'm surprised he did not put on rubber gloves to avoid finger prints. The boy needs some training bad.

Time for an attorney. It was an illegal search when they ran the serial numbers on the gun along with several other things wrong here.

Absolutely...If your on the street as a LEO you better know more than that guy. Otherwise, the city better be ready to defend the actions of an untrained P.O. and have some dough set aside for retraining and to pay the litigation costs.

Thanks, some good info here, both for cops and ccw carriers.

One of the bad things about open carry is that YOU are target #1 for a bad guy. Got to remember that it's his call as to when he's going to be bad.

This happened about 6 months ago, she wasn't issued a citation so she didn't get his name or badge number. I have a scanner and listen quite often to the local police, sheriff, and highway patrol traffic, and on every traffic stop they always do a wants and warrant check on every driver and passenger, and if there is a weapon involved they always run the serial number. They don't have the in car computers to run these checks, so everything is broadcast on the radio. It's always been a common practice, at least in this part of AZ.

In PA the law states you do not have to tell a LEO you are a CC holder.

LEO's are just like any other people, you get all kinds with all kinds of bias. Some are pro-CC, some think "civilians" shouldn't own or carry firearms.
