An old acquaintance called me up and asked that I come by. He offered me his old carry gun, which he thought was a 686. It turned out to be a 65-2 with 3" barrel. He offered it to me for $600, and I told him it was worth more. He wouldn't change his mind. So, here it is.

To my surprise, one of the grip panels serial numbers to the gun. I showed it to my neighbor, and he offered me $800.

Nice gun. Theres something about those that strike my fancy. That one looks to have been well cared for, and serialized grips too. Nice.

Very nice. I think you might owe your old acquaintance a nice dinner. :)

And I hope you didn't flip it to your neighbor. :(

Absolutely not. I told the gentleman his pistol was worth more than $600, and I showed him completed GB auctions showing how high some had gone. He remained at $600. I didn't buy it to make a fast dollar.

Very Nice and $600 is a great price, I just bought a Model 65-5 but won't get it until next week. It's a Police trade 4" and not the coveted 3", so I expect it will be a project gun. That's ok, I need a project.

So, where does one find a, as you call it, "friend?" Obviously, my so-called "friends" are just "acquaintances!" Nobody's banging my front door down forcing me to buy a nice gun like that! AND, sticking to his guns on the price, even though you said it's worth more. There's not a friend category for that in the online dating services...I heard.

I've been pondering that myself. I don't think he'll be around much longer, due to his declining health, and neither does he. Years ago, I used to invite him to my range quite a bit. And he did say he knew I'd get use out of it. I'll be keeping it, because it was his.

It's not a Smith, but I did pretty well on another 3" revolver last summer. I got a call out of the blue from an acquaintance who was unable to find a buyer due to the gun's caliber.

Later that day I went home with what looked like a new Ruger GP100 10mm Wiley Clapp model 3" revolver, box and paperwork, full box of Silvertips and three moon clips of HP ammo for a total of $625.

I get lucky once in a while, but I've done well on three buys in the past year that just fell in my lap.
