Deer avoidance in the 'burbs

a friend of the wife's family has them on her car. she has had them on every car she has owned for the 20 years i have been around...with the exception of her current vehicle.. of the 5 cars with them in that time span, she has hit 5 deer with all 5 cars...her current car has made it 3 years without a deer incident....it's the only one she has not hit a deer with

That round thing you hang onto is to turn the car and avoid things. Teach her how to make calculated movements at hwy speeds.

I presume you mean to actually ride along with her and get her to attempt some basic evading maneuvers at something close to actual highway speeds... ?

Just how do you propose to live long enough to teach her how to be successful at this? :D

Crstrode, thanks for the laugh. :)

Lots of people up where I live have tried those dear chasers and they do not work. I live out a ways in the boonies on a large lake and we have plenty of deer sightings and of course many deer/ vehicle events. Crashes with deer are very very common, seeing blood splats on the road are also very common.

You learn to drive in center of road if no oncoming traffic, you learn to be very watchful and at certain areas to slow down and be extremely careful.

NY law will allow the driver of a hit vehicle to claim the carcass or designate a party to take it. You need a paper signed by a LEO or Encon officer and you can legally possess.

As this is a rural community most all out here hunt so people are very experienced with deer preparations and not much goes to waste. If the driver does not want or has left scene a charity can be called to get the carcass.

I had a pair of whistles mounted on a pick-up truck a few years ago and I couldn't tell that they did anything. Even if they did work the people that make them state that you have to be moving at least 35 to 40 mph which is too fast to be driving in deer infested suburbs.
