Del Monte canned spinach shortage

If you ever try fresh spinach, raw in a salad or cooked in a variety of ways, you might find canned spinach a distant second. No shortage of fresh spinach that I'm aware of.

OP, in Texas you can grow your own 8 months out of the year. I'm in USDA
zone 6/7 and can grow almost year around, maybe not July or August. And
have a crop going att and we have had temps in the teens. Also have some coming on in the green house should be ready for Jan./Feb and after
that I can plant again outside. I also grow Swiss Chard which I like and it
is also a hardy plant.

Must be the preservatives

I would have to think frozen or fresh would be so much better, why canned?

I have had the frozen and fresh spinach and neither one comes close to the flavor profile of Del Monte canned. Must be the preservatives!

But what do I know, in my 60's and still eat a couple of Jack in the Box tacos 2 or 3 times a year. The food I grew up with always seems to be the best.

The high salt content probably has a lot to do with the flavor. Many canned, processed foods would be almost inedible (or so we think) without salt, something we've become very accustomed to. Canned spinach is pretty good for making a spinach souffle, only because it's more convenient by not having to be cooked down first like fresh spinach.

A an important point in making canned spinach more palatable is liberal use of a hot pepper sauce.

As for Jack-In-The-Box tacos, despite the fact that they are unhealthy and downright nasty to some, I find one order of three every few years is a tasty treat. I'm no fan of fast food places, but I will make this exception. In fact, I think it's been three or four years...

Grew up with 4 siblings and Del Monte canned spinach was a staple at our table. Wife likes it as well so we have been eating it for our 40+ years of marriage.

Used to hunt doves in Crystal City South Texas, where Del Monte had a canning plant with a random statue of Popeye in town.

Lately it has been harder to find than toilet paper at local grocery stores.

Is it a "hunker down" vegetable or is there a "secret" anti virus component to it of which I am not aware?

Only brand at my major supermarket is Popeye's. Hmmm.

Margarine, in the 3lb tubs, has been missing at times here. Last week it was pasta.
Makes you wonder what would happen if we had a real disaster in this country.

There’s a reason I have cracked corn out there, fresh on the hoof if needed. While everyone was buying ammo I was stocking up on food and supplies. Mayo jars filled with stick matches. Peanut butter, jelly, bread mixes, flour, yeast, can goods.

OK, now I know your taste buds are blown. :)
Jack in the Box grease bombs!!

I grew up with Del Monte's canned spinach, can't say I really liked it. Now that I think about it, I don't think I have had any since 1965, the year I left home. As for Jack-In-The -Box tacos, any chance I get I will order two of the three taco orders, lots of their taco sauce and sit there and eat all six. Cheap lunch, but the wife refuses to go there with me. I just don't get it.

Rice, pasta, soups, canned tomato products, ramen, canned vegetables, beans canned and dry, flour, sugar, bottled water and condiments have had some shortages. What is short in one store might be in another store. Another shortage of toilet tissue, paper towels and wet wipes but not as bad this time, most likely due to the extreme hoarding during the first go around.

I like canned spinach...I'm the only one in the house who does so I always bought those small sized cans. Our local supermarket stopped carrying the small cans some time ago. I found some in Walmart a few times and got some at another supermarket where I travel occasionally. The last time I was there the only thing they had was ONE full sized can of Popeye brand. One thing I like to make is a spinach pizza on a Boboli shell. Those small cans were the perfect size to spread out on a Boboli
