Del Monte canned spinach shortage

Another one my wife reminded me of one......

In 'The Outlaw Josey Wales':

Wales: "I notice when I get to like'n somebody they ain't around too long.

Chief: "I noticed when you get to dislikin' someone they ain't around too long neither."

So when we go to the store and can't find regular items we say:

"When we get to like'n something it ain't around too long!"

Help others when you can! If you can give some, give it where it will do some good.

Our local VFW had just reopened for only 2 weeks when the orders came down from on high that it had to be closed again. That means the cooks and wait staff are again going to be out of work.

I went to have supper there about half the nights it was open to help support it. Since tonight was the last night it would be open until the 3 week shutdown ends, I added a $2 bill to my usual tips of Golden Dollars.

In spite of Popeye, many folks don't like canned spinach.
I have always loved it. Haven't been able to find my Del Monte since before the China virus.
I have hoarded two cans for some time.
A 6 pack is on Amazon for $32.00.

Spinach

Spinach has always been a favorite food of mine, all of 89 years. Mom fed it to me before I can remember. I grew up not knowing that everyone was supposed to hate it.

Before the Corona epidemic my wife prepared fresh, baby spinach, weekly, in several ways, and we enjoyed it, to no end.

Now, we have to rely on our Son to supply us with groceries. This he does with Not a complaint.

The last batch of spinach, that he bought for us was different than any that I've ever seen. It is a, small, hard, crinkly, gritty, bitter, leaf, similar to Canadian thistle. The quantity, of this batch looks to be at least a years supply. I've only been able to get a couple of bites of it down my gullet so far, and my guess is that the garbage can will be the last recipient, to suffer from this batch of spinach.

I may ask to try canned spinach, as a last resort.

That sounds like Kale. Horrid nasty stuff. The yuppies can have it.

I might eat some fresh Spinach,
But I will stand down on canned spinach.
Since I have never eaten any, piece of cake!

Grew up eating the canned spinach, liked it well enough until finally tasting some of my Mamie's homegrown.
I still like it fine but much prefer fresh, any which way it's prepped.

It's baaack

Del Monte canned spinach has made it back to the shelves in my area!

Had some for lunch and dinner. Call me weird, I like it.

Guess all the preppers who were slurping it up are now laying in more bullets and we know how expensive those are now.

Grew up with 4 siblings and Del Monte canned spinach was a staple at our table. Wife likes it as well so we have been eating it for our 40+ years of marriage.

Used to hunt doves in Crystal City South Texas, where Del Monte had a canning plant with a random statue of Popeye in town.

Lately it has been harder to find than toilet paper at local grocery stores.

Is it a "hunker down" vegetable or is there a "secret" anti virus component to it of which I am not aware?

I would have to think frozen or fresh would be so much better, why canned?

Strongly agree with ralph7. For me, the question is why canned spinach didn't disappear sixty or seventy years ago.
