I have never had any dealings with them on a pistol but I have been around people using ported barrel shotguns and have shot them some. I can't tell that they help recoil but they sure are loud and annoying to be around. A barrel only needs 2 holes. One to put the bullet in and one at the other end for the bullet to come out. Larry

I saw this thread title and thought you meant S&W was making the 500 without the internal lock. Sigh.

^^ :( Not this AGAIN - The IL isn't going away! :( ^^

"freedom 475" ~ Nice gun indeed :D !

500 > 460 no?

I thought only the bore was different, and that the rest of the barrel/frame was the same between the two. 460 comp on a 500 would be a no-no, but 500 comp on a 460 would work. 45cal vs 50.

My research has shown that the 460 was made with a Different comp with a a few demensions changed...I'm sure to keep someone from accidentally putting the 460 comp on the 500 and blowing things up

Makes sense. Now... WHERE DO WE SEND PAYMENT?

I want one

PM sent.

had to meet 10 character requirement. :)

Very nice 4" .500 setup you have there.
Does look a bit strange with that comp on there, espically seeing it with holes ---------- :D
Our large gun shop where I just bought my S&W 8 3/8" .460 just got in the S&W .500 in both the 4" & 6 1/2" barrels.
I've never shot the 4" .500, but it sure looks tempting !
Since I already have the 6 1/2" i'm thinking ------ HUM ?

Make one for a 460 so I can hunt without ear plugs please.

S&W made a factory one for the 460s, just not the 500s. They are hard to find though. You will still go deafer than hell shooting a 460 without ears in either case.

Karl Nills Grips

I sold my .500 but I kept the wood Karl nills grips, they are in like new condition. and are for sale if anyone is interested.

Make sure to turn your set screws the right direction when you remove your factory comps and be sure to clean the pile of lead off the end of the barrel and out of the groove and these should be a clean fit.
Funny you should mention that. I went through all my X-frame comps today cleaning/lubing everything. Can't wait.

Got mine......

Yesterday and it would not quite fit. It would only go in about half way.

I studied it and measured but did not want to start filing on it and contacted Wes. He very readily agreed to send me another and offered to refund my money if I wanted it.

Today I decided to study it again and discovered the problem was probably the diameter of the bushing barrel in the "grooves", which receive the 500s "lands". It miked out to about .002 more in diameter.

After about 20 minutes of careful filing with small files the "Non" compensator went in and can be removed with finger pressure.

I immediately took it out and put some light and heavy loads through it and to say it is a pleasure to shoot is an understatement.

My hearty thanks go out to Wes and his effort in making my 500 a much better toy!!!

My 4" fit perfectly. My 8", I got slightly less engagement than you. Every one of my factory 500 comps (4 total) fits equally well between both guns, and both of Wes' fit PERFECTLY in my 4", but my 8" one is just a no-go. Awaiting feedback from wes, but it sounds like your solution may be mine as well. I thought it was a few thousands too long perhaps for my 8" as it appeared that it was hitting on the front of the catch lugs, but it may indeed be too large diameter for my 8". I'm sure it is a hair's width given that 6 comps fit in my 4", but only 4 comps (all factory) fit in my 8". Very odd IMHO. And yes, the 8" was sparkle clean.

Edit: Wanted to be perfectly clear here, the variation is the GUNS, not Wes' comps. His comps seem identical.

I got one. I really like it. My 4" is now very similar to my 5" JRS, and I like that.

Own a 4 inch and the Lew Horton 6 1/2 versions. Will your comp fit both of these? If so, I'll take one. Please pm me with me payment info or email at [email protected]
Thanks!
