Dick's is coming to town.

Never has a business been so aptly named.

Personally I refuse to business with them for two reasons, one they ID EVERY purchaser of ammo despite their age and when gun owners needed someone to stand tall in the hysteria following Newtown Dick's cut and ran leaving gun owners in the breeze by yanking all of their semi auto firearms. I won't do business with someone that at the first sign of political correctness cuts and runs like Mexican Army at the battle of San Jacinto. No thanks but I'll buy from someone else.

Well, this is good information. I think I will limit my visit to the grand opening and then continue to frequent Academt and the LGSs. Thanks for the replies. Again,

Well look at it this way. You will have another place to go. They aren't a bad store. For guns and ammo I go to my lgs just 4 miles south of my house out here in the country. I cruise through Dick's ,Gander, and Cabellas to check for what I'm after as far as all other gear. I usually shop mostly at Dicks and Cabelas.I do like the point system Dicks has to offer. At least you get a little back. Right now I have a 30.00 coupon to use towards whatever I want, even ammo.I usually use it for clothing and gear.Hope this helps.Get your score card set up.

The nearest Dick's store is maybe a half mile from Gander, but somehow neither store seems to feel the need to have competitive prices on anything.
There is a Bass Pro coming soon - hopefully they'll force some more reasonable prices instead of just having 3 overpriced stores near each other.

Re: Bass Pro, good luck. Reloading stuff is sky high. Last time I was there they were pricing powder 50% higher than anybody else. When they opened here they were selling Rockchucker Supreme reloading kits for $100 more than the going rate.

They are a generalist sporting goods store with a lot of square footage. While they don't have the goods that a specialty store has, they'll do in a pinch.

Aptly named establishment. I want to scream every time I go in there. Last time I went I was in uniform and had "the gun guy" behind the counter explain to me how great the M & P 45 I was carrying was. Idiot.

Their gun staff is beyond stupid, and their purchasing policies border on assnine. They have to walk the gun out and hand it to you in the parking lot. I almost lost my temper with that one.

I wouldn't even go to the grand opening. Total waste of time.

The only good thing about a Dicks is when they open they will be stocked with ammo after opening day though they will be hit and miss like everyoneelse. So take advantage of it on day one.

I've been in the local Dick's twice...first and last time. They are overpriced and not a friend of 2A. GM is 2A friendly but mostly overpriced. Occasionally they get overstocked on older trade-ins and have a gun show type sale, complete with haggling. This is good and I watch for them. They had some decently priced S&W T-shirts a few months ago and I bought several. Did I mention they're mostly overpriced? Academy Sports is a little better when they have something in stock. I prefer to deal with individuals or local gun stores/pawn shops.

IMHO:

Are they good merchants or not? Not really.
What about prices? High.
Are they competitive? No.
Are the clerks well informed? No.
And courteous? Some are.

Since they opened a local store here LAST Summer, through December I'd spent over $2k with them... After their idiotic decision last December, I've spent maybe $35.

They aren't completely off my list, just at the very bottom of places I'll shop if I need something locally.

Dick's is opening here in Pensacola in Cordova Mall in the next few days. Never been in one. Just what should I expect. Are they good merchants or not? What about prices, are they competitive and are the clerks well informed and courteous?

Thanks in advance,

they aint up a heya, college kids, Dicks in one end of the mall Gander Mt. in the other. and if I believe the rumors, Dicks stopped selling AR"s when Gov. komo put them on his hit list. now they aint nutin but a high end clothes store .

The one in our area started off with a pretty decent gun department, but has evolved into mostly a sporting goods store with a very tiny gun section...not even loading components. Mostly clothing, shoes, golf, bowling, cycling, and exercise equipment. The computer age has stores constantly adjusting inventory to fit items that sell best into available floor space. Evidently, most of the gun related items we love do not rate high enough on the profit scale.

Before the craziness started they would have sales on ammo. When they did, I would buy some there. I haven't been in Dick's this year, but I hear the ammo scalpers line up at 6:00AM. They have a lot of clothes and sneakers. In NC they do not sell handguns. I believe their long guns are special made for Dick's sales.

I do not shop at Dicks anymore. We have had 2 bad experiences with one a bait and switch. Both times I ask for a manager. Both times it was a male and they only said sorry nothing more or less. They have good products but their attitude is customer lacking.

there is not much in the way of good sporting goods stores without driving for 50+ miles. i was in the need of new golf shoes a few years ago and made the long drive to dicks as it was the best option. i also had $$$ for a new set of clubs. i looked over the clubs first and settled on a set around the $700 price range. then i found a pair of shoes and got the attention of a salesman. told him my size and he went to the back...or so i thought...after about 10 minutes...i put my shoe back on and started walking around looking for the salesman. i found him in the room where they let you hit balls. for grins an giggles, i gave him another 10 minutes, then went to get a manager. the manager said "that is his job". in the end, the guy in the room didn't buy the clubs, and i walked out with all of my money that day.

i did go higher up, i'm still waiting for a reply after 8 years...
